Land snails benefit from human alterations in rural landscapes and habitats

open access: yesEcosphere, 2017
Metapopulation functioning in the context of landscape and habitat structure is generally well understood. However, in human‐transformed landscapes, human disturbance may affect not only a species of interest but also biotic interactions in which that ...

Natural Products Targeting Notch Signaling in Cancer: Mechanistic Insights and Food‐Based Chemoprevention Potential

open access: yesFood Frontiers, Volume 7, Issue 1, January 2026.
The Notch signaling pathway plays a dual role in cancer, acting as both a tumor promoter and suppressor depending on cellular context. This review highlights how natural products modulate Notch signaling to inhibit tumor initiation, progression, angiogenesis, and cancer stem cell maintenance.

The significance of woody vegetation's nonproductive elements for the overwintering of key biocontrol agents in intensively used agricultural areas

open access: yesPest Management Science, Volume 82, Issue 1, Page 252-261, January 2026.
Nonproduction woody vegetation provides crucial overwintering habitats for spiders, enhancing biocontrol services in agricultural landscapes. Incorporating these habitats into land management supports ecosystem services and biodiversity. Abstract BACKGROUND Successful overwintering habitats are critical for the long‐term survival of biocontrol agents ...

Preschoolers' Scientific Curiosity and Inquiry Capabilities: An Ecological Research Approach

open access: yesJournal of Research in Science Teaching, Volume 63, Issue 1, Page 40-61, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Existing tools for measuring scientific curiosity often fail to capture its multifaceted, dynamic nature—particularly in early childhood, where behaviors are context‐dependent, non‐verbal, and emergent. These challenges limit our ability to understand and support young children's scientific engagement.

Assessing the success of a horizon scanning approach in predicting invasive non‐native species arrival

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 1, January 2026.
We conclude that horizon scanning provides a rapid, affordable and successful mechanism to predict the arrival of high‐risk INNS. We highlight the importance of citizen science, including biological recording, and of local expertise for detecting and documenting arrival of INNS.

‘It's like these scientists own the rains’: indigenous knowledge, disaster warnings, and the politics of legitimacy in Malawi

open access: yesDisasters, Volume 50, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract This study examines the declining use of indigenous knowledge (IK) in early warning systems for climate‐related disasters in Malawi, drawing on qualitative data from four disaster‐prone districts and national‐level institutions. While IK is frequently referenced in policy discourse and programmatic frameworks, its practical integration into ...
