Land snail fauna in Gunung Kuang Limestone Hill, Perak, Malaysia and its conservation implications (Mollusca, Gastropoda)

open access: yesZooKeys, 2018
This paper presents the first land snail species checklist for Gunung Kuang (Kuang Hill), a limestone hill located next to Gunung Kanthan that is recognised as one of the most important limestone hills for its diverse land snail fauna in Kinta Valley ...

On the verge of extinction – revision of a highly endangered Swiss alpine snail with description of a new genus, Raeticella gen. nov. (Gastropoda, Eupulmonata, Hygromiidae) [PDF]

open access: yesZooKeys, 2022
The phylogenetic status of the alpine land snail Fruticicola biconica has remained questionable since it was described by Eder in 1917. Considered a microendemic species from mountain tops in Central Switzerland, the shell is specially adapted for life ...

Land Snails of the Madeira Islands [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1922
IN 1892 (Journal of Conchology, vol. vii. No. 1) the Rev. R. Boog Watson published a very interesting discussion of the Madeira snails, in which he raised many questions concerning their origin and history, which he did not attempt to answer. Today, we are still groping for light, but I believe we may reach a number of conclusions which are not likely ...

Antibacterial and Antifungal Activities of Proteins Extracted from Seven Different Snails

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2018
Snails have been used both as a food and as a treatment for a variety of medicinal conditions. In this study, seven different snail proteins were evaluated for their antimicrobial activity. Fresh water and land snails of seven different live species were

Prvý nález živej populácie ulitníka Vertigo moulinsiana (Dupuy, 1849) na Podunajskej nížine [PDF]

open access: yesMalacologica Bohemoslovaca, 2014
Until 2013, no published records of the Desmoulin's whorl snail (Vertigo moulinsiana) were known from the Danube lowland in the Slovak Republic. In this paper we present the first record of the Desmoulin's whorl snail in this area, and report the site ...

Nové nálezy tmavoretky bělavé Monacha cartusiana (O. F. Müller, 1774) ve Strakonicích a okolí [PDF]

open access: yesMalacologica Bohemoslovaca, 2023
The thermophilous land snail Monacha cartusiana has been spreading in Central Europe in recent years, presumably as a consequence of warming. In the years 2020–2022, several new localities of this snail were discovered in Strakonice, Horažďovice, and ...

Exploring land snails’ response to habitat characteristics and their potential as bioindicators of riparian forest quality

open access: yesEcological Indicators, 2021
Riparian ecosystems are crucial for landscape-level biodiversity, especially in highly anthropic and agricultural areas. Although the low mobility of snails reduces their dispersal capacity and makes them vulnerable to habitat degradation, they are less ...

A phylogeny of the land snails (Gastropoda: Pulmonata) [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series B: Biological Sciences, 2001
We have undertaken the first large-scale molecular phylogenetic analysis of the Stylommatophora. Sequences of the ribosomal RNA gene-cluster were examined in 104 species of snails and slugs from 50 families, encompassing all the currently recognized major groups. It allows an independent test of the present classification based on morphology.

Land‐use in Europe affects land snail assemblages directly and indirectly by modulating abiotic and biotic drivers

open access: yesEcosphere, 2019
Type and intensity of land‐use vary in space and time and strongly contribute to changes in richness and composition of species communities. In this study, we examined land snail communities in forests and grasslands in three regions of Germany. We aimed
