Three‐Dimensional Object Perception Can Emerge From Predictive Learning
ABSTRACT How do infants develop the ability to perceive objects in a 3D world? The theory of core knowledge suggests infants employ a few principles, such as cohesion, continuity, rigidity, and contact, to guide inference of objects. However, it is challenging to answer how object perception can be learned with similar constraints faced by infants and ...

Environmental drivers regulate carbon, water, and energy fluxes differently in perennial and annual bioenergy agroecosystems. Long‐term eddy covariance data and interpretable machine learning reveal broader temperature responses, more stable water‐use efficiency, and sustained air heating in perennials, contrasted with stronger atmospheric sensitivity ...

The underappreciated roles of fog and dew on vegetation and biocrusts
Summary Fog and dew represent minor components of ecosystem water budgets in most ecosystems. However, fog and dew can play an essential role in ecosystem dynamics and are particularly important for water‐limited systems. In addition to serving as direct water inputs, fog and dew can influence microclimate and water redistribution, thereby promoting ...

Wintertime land surface albedo of forested environments [PDF]
Forest canopies are complex 3-D structures at the interface between the atmosphere and the land surface which greatly affect radiative processes, especially across seasonally snow-covered domains. The increase in process complexity associated with these areas continues to be a source of uncertainty in land surface modelling.

Long‐Term Variability and Spatial Differentiation of the Frost‐Free Period in Iceland
Warming in Iceland (May–September) is expressed as fewer Tmin < 0°C days in the interior and more Tmin > 0°C days along the coasts. ABSTRACT Climate change in subarctic regions leads to significant transformations in thermal conditions; however, the long‐term variability of the frost‐free season (FFS)—and consequently, the growing period—remains poorly

The local cooling potential of land restoration in Africa
Land restoration is becoming increasingly popular as a climate change mitigation and adaptation measure. It is suggested that resulting vegetation changes can impact the local surface temperature through biophysical processes such as albedo warming and ...

Abstract The Maritime Continent (MC) has undergone rapid deforestation in recent decades, altering its land‐atmosphere energy balance. Using idealized Community Earth System Model simulations, we examined heat extremes under progressively increasing deforestation extents, from localized coastal clearing to complete forest removal.

Abstract The surface energy budget governs Arctic sea‐ice growth/melt, yet observations are sparse, and reanalysis data sets suffer from systematic biases. Here, we train a neural network with observational data to bias‐correct hourly ERA5 fluxes over Arctic ice‐covered regions (≥70°N; sea‐ice concentration >80%) for 1994–2024.

A Novel Ice Cloud Optical Property Model for Passive and Active Remote Sensing Applications
Abstract A new broad‐spectrum ice cloud optical property model, namely the Passive‐Active Remote Sensing Consistent (PARSC) model, is developed to achieve consistency between passive and active sensor‐based ocean‐occurring ice cloud property retrievals.
