Modelling the spatial pattern of forest fires using NDVI and land surface temperature in Southern African landscapes

open access: yes, 2012
In this study we used maxent to test whether; and for which month of the growing season SPOT derived normalized difference vegetation index (SPOT NDVI) data can be used to predict fire occurrence in August, September and October (AUC>0.5).

Origami‐Inspired Structural Design for Aquatic‐Terrestrial Amphibious Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This work presents a lightweight amphibious origami robot actuated by a single shape memory alloy wire. A rigid foldable origami structure with displacement amplification enables efficient terrestrial crawling and aquatic swimming. The addition of fan‐shaped units allows controllable turning in both environments.

Sensitivity of a distributed temperature-radiation index melt model based on AWS observations and surface energy balance fluxes, Hurd Peninsula glaciers, Livingston Island, Antarctica

open access: yes, 2012
We use an automatic weather station and surface mass balance dataset spanning four melt seasons collected on Hurd Peninsula Glaciers, South Shetland Islands, to investigate the point surface energy balance, to determine the absolute and relative ...

The Impact of Land Cover Change on Surface Water Temperature of Small Lakes in Eastern Ontario from 1985 to 2020

open access: yes, 2023
Land Cover Change (LCC) has been shown to significantly impact the magnitude and trend of Land Surface Temperature (LST). However, the influence of LCC near waterbodies outside of an urban environment remain less understood.

Study on the Effects of Land cover Changes on Surface Albedo and Surface Temperature in Bangladesh Using Remote Sensing and GIS

open access: yesInternational Journal of Environment and Geoinformatics, 2019
Dynamic changes in Earth’s land cover characteristics and associated temporally evolving biophysical surface properties, as well as their ultimate impacts on surface radiative (surface albedo) and climatic properties (land surface temperature), have ...

From Lab to Landscape: Environmental Biohybrid Robotics for Ecological Futures

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This Perspective explores environmental biohybrid robotics, integrating living tissues, microorganisms, and insects for operation in real‐world ecosystems. It traces the leap from laboratory experiments to forests, wetlands, and urban environments and discusses key challenges, development pathways, and opportunities for ecological monitoring and ...

Evaluation of European Land Data Assimilation System (ELDAS) products using in site observations

open access: yes, 2008
Three land-surface models with land-data assimilation scheme (DA) were evaluated for one growing season using in situ observations obtained across Europe. To avoid drifts in the land-surface state in the models, soil moisture corrections are derived from

Spatial Engineering of Gas Diffusion Layers Overcomes Mass Transport Limitations in Fuel Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Mass transport limitations at high current densities hinder polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) performance due to inefficient water management and reactant distribution. Gas diffusion layer (GDL) perforation offers a potential solution as an alternative to complex flow‐field modifications.
