Evaluation of tension lap splices for code provisions

Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Structures and Buildings, 2012
Six real-size beams were tested in order to examine the reliability of tension lap splices for the minimum requirements of clear cover, spacing between bars and transverse reinforcement. The beams were prepared in accordance with the minimum provisions of the American Concrete Institute building code requirements for structural concrete (ACI 318–08 ...

Retrofitting of Rectangular Columns with Deficient Lap Splices

Journal of Composites for Construction, 2010
The cyclic behavior of eight 0.4-scale reinforced concrete column specimens is investigated. The columns incorporated deficient design details to simulate bridge columns built in Washington State prior to 1971. Two columns were tested as reference specimens, five were tested after retrofitting using carbon fiber-reinforced polymer CFRP, and one was ...

Design of Lap-Spliced Bars: Is Simplification Possible?

ACI Structural Journal, 2006
While the estimation accuracy of the strength of lap splices has been improving, the complexity of design for reinforcement development has progressively increased. This research study investigates the development of a simple and reliable design expression.

Lap Splices in Flexurally Loaded Masonry Walls

The Masonry Society Journal, 1995
Ten partially grounded reinforced concrete masonry wall specimens were tested to examine lap splice behavior. Specifically of interest were the effects of variations in the compressive strength of the masonry assemblage upon the performance of lap splices and overall specimen behavior.

Strength of Lapped Splices in Reinforced Concrete Columns

ACI Journal Proceedings, 1979
Results of 51 tests on full scale columns with main reinforcement lap-spliced are presented. Difficulties in evaluating the strength of these specimens led to the development of an alternative method of calculation based on the stress-strain relationship for the concrete.

Bond Strength of Noncontact Tension Lap Splices

ACI Structural Journal, 1996
The subject of transverse spacing between two reinforcing bars lapped in a noncontact or spaced tension splice is addressed in the ACI Building Code (ACI 318-89). The code provisions are based on monotonic tests performed before 1957 of pullout specimens, beam-end specimens, and small-scale beam specimens, where the clear splice-bar spacing was small ...

RC STRUCTURAL WALLS WITH STAGGERED LAP SPLICES

Lap splices, in both their detailing and placement, are critical to the seismic response of reinforced concrete (RC) walls. Failure of in-situ RC walls associated with lap splices were most recently recorded after earthquakes in Chile (2010), Taiwan (2016) and Turkey (2023).

Influence of bar continuity on behaviour of lapped splices

2010
Most Design Codes encourage the staggering of lapped splices in a section, such that a portion of the bars in the cross section remain continuous throughout the lap zone. A penalty on lap length may be imposed if all bars are lapped at one section. In the literature, however, most of test specimens have had all reinforcement lapped at the same section.
