Chromosomenzahl-Varianten beiPurpura lapillus
Experientia, 1950The normal haploid chromosome number of the prosobranch speciesPurpura lapillus is 18 in oogenesis. Animals of an isolated population near Roscoff (Bretagne, France) of the same species have been found to possess 13 chromosomes only. The two chromosome sets are compared and their evolutionary relationships briefly discussed.

Stabilizing selection in the dog‐whelk (Nucella lapillus)
Journal of Zoology, 1968The amount of stabilizing selection undergone by a population of animals at different times of its life can be estimated by comparing the variances of different age samples. This paper describes an investigation into the intensities of selection experienced by populations of the common dog‐whelk, Nucella lapillus (L.) exposed on different shores to ...

Nucella lapillus as a paratenic host for Maritrema arenaria
Journal of Helminthology, 1999Metacercariae of the microphallid trematode Maritrema arenaria are found in the shore barnacle Semibalanoides balanoides which is heavily predated by the dog whelk, Nucella lapillus. This study demonstrated that, under experimental and natural conditions, M. arenaria metacercarial cysts were ingested by N.

Rates of feeding by Thais (Nucella) Lapillus (L.)
Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology, 1978Abstract A hyperbolic relation between size of Thais lapillus (L.) and preferred prey (Mytilus edulis L.) size has been found. Times spent drilling and ingesting the prey did not vary for snails of different sizes, but were shorter at higher temperatures.

Triphenyltin induces imposex in Nucella lapillus through an aphallic route
Aquatic Toxicology, 2016Triphenyltin (TPT) was used until recently as a biocide in antifouling systems and nowadays is still applied as an agriculture pesticide in some countries. This compound is known to cause imposex (the imposition of male characters in females of gastropod molluscs) in a very limited number of species, when compared with tributyltin (TBT), the ...

Mineralogical differences in populations ofThais lapillus Linné (Gastropoda: Prosobranchiata)

New insights into the mechanism of imposex induction in the dogwhelk Nucella lapillus
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part C: Toxicology & Pharmacology, 2005In an attempt to clarify the mechanism(s) of tributyltin-mediated imposex induction in females of the neogastropod Nucella lapillus, dogwhelks collected in an almost imposex free population were exposed to several treatments for a 3 month-period, and the effects on imposex induction and testosterone/estradiol levels were evaluated.

Nucella lapillus (L.) as a predator of edible cockles
Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology, 1972Abstract Combined field and laboratory evidence suggests that most Cerastoderma edule L. taken by Nucella lapillus (L.) on ‘Old Den’, an intertidal reef in the Humber estuary, are drilled, and that normally only one predator penetrates the shell. Other Nucella extract flesh from a penetrated cockle near its mantle margin.

Kinetics of the development of imposex in transplanted adult dogwhelks, Nucella lapillus
Environmental Pollution, 2000The degree of imposex in dogwhelks, Nucella lapillus (L.), is normally described in terms of a series of vas deferens development stages. The progression of adult female dogwhelks through vas deferens stages 0-5 in response to exposure to tributyltin at 2-128 ng/l has been modelled on the basis of first-order kinetics. Modelling indicated that the half-
