Abstract Lappi and Smolander (1988) in their assessment of Koen's (1987) paper failed to realise the distinction between statistical and mathematical treatments of photosynthesis formulae. Although the application of the latter is restricted if approximations are made, it can be used to elucidate the statistical problem.
