Large carnivores and zoos as catalysts for engaging the public in the protection of biodiversity [PDF]
Addressing the biodiversity crisis requires renewed collaborative approaches. Large carnivores are ambassador species, and as such they can aid the protection of a wide range of species, including evolutionarily distinct and threatened ones, while being ...

Habitat suitability, corridors and dispersal barriers for large carnivores in Poland
Carnivores are often particularly sensitive to landscape fragmentation.\ud Ecological corridors may help to connect local populations, ensuring gene flow\ud and retaining viable meta-populations.

Patterns of brown bear damages to agro-livestock activities in North-Eastern Italy across 15 years
Livestock predations along with damages to croplands and beehives, are some of the main drivers of human-bear conflicts in shared landscapes. In the North-Eastern Italian Alps, the only brown bear Ursus arctos breeding population persists in the ...

Palaeoproteomic Deconvolution of Physical and Genetic Collagen Mixtures
ClassiCOL_v2 uses a novel “peptide patching” framework that treats any collagen sample as a patchwork of peptide sequences derived from phylogenetically related species. This allows the algorithm to simultaneously resolve two previously intractable problems: multi‐species samples and/or database deficiencies.

Understanding the human dimensions of coexistence between carnivores and people: A case study in Namibia [PDF]
Many carnivore populations were in decline throughout much of the 20th century, but due to recent conservation policies, their numbers are stabilising or even increasing in some areas of the world.

Abstract The oval window (OW) is an opening connecting the inner and middle ear. Its area has been shown to consistently scale with body mass (BM) in primates, and has been used alongside semi‐circular canal (SCC) size to differentiate Homo sapiens and fossil hominins, including Paranthropus robustus.

Abstract Muscle architecture is a major determinant of muscle performance and, in mammalian lineages, has been correlated with both feeding ecology and locomotor behaviors. Over the past decade, contrast‐enhanced micro‐CT (DiceCT) has emerged as an alternative to traditional dissection‐based measurement.

The livestock depredation by large carnivores is a main cause for increasing human–wildlife conflicts (HWCs) and is one of the prime challenges for carnivore's conservation and a major economic concern to livestock‐dependent communities around wildlife ...

Patterns of spinal motion, kinematic spaces and the land‐to‐sea transition in carnivorans
Using 3D reconstructions, we quantify intervertebral joint mobility to investigate how cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebral regions evolved distinct kinematic roles in pinnipeds. The findings reveal lineage‐specific adaptations for swimming and highlight the functional significance of vertebral joint flexibility in ecological transitions.

Large terrestrial carnivores play a crucial role in the top–down control of terrestrial ecosystems by maintaining ecosystem stability and biodiversity. However, intense interspecific competition typically occurs among large sympatric carnivores, leading ...
