Participatory networks for large-scale monitoring of large carnivores: Pumas and jaguars of the Upper Paraná atlantic forest [PDF]
Most large carnivores are secretive and threatened, and these characteristics pose problems for research on, and monitoring of, these species across extensive areas.

Cardiac morphological and morphometric analysis of Ardea alba
Abstract Ardea alba (Linnaeus, 1758) is a widely distributed heron species whose cardiovascular morphology remains poorly described. This study aimed to characterize the cardiac morphology and morphometry of adult A. alba. Ten specimens were analyzed using radiographic, morphometric, histological, scanning electron microscopy, and three‐dimensional ...

Three‐dimensional digital analysis of musteloid masticatory muscle architecture
Musteloids span an enormous breadth of dietary modes within a single superfamily. In this study, we utilize digital dissection techniques to reconstruct the internal 3D anatomy of muscles within the musteloid feeding apparatus, and explore how dietary specializations might alter the size, orientation, and curvature of fascicles therein.

Postnatal craniomandibular growth in Harbor seals (Phoca vitulina vitulina)
Postnatal ontogeny in Harbor seals (Phoca vitulina vitulina). Cranium and mandible grow rapidly until 5 years of age, followed by a deceleration and finally a stagnation. Abstract As secondarily aquatic carnivores, seals display several phenotypic differences compared to their terrestrial relatives.

Fascicle measurement methods do result in lengths that are significantly different
A recent comparison of the most prevalent methods for measuring fascicles, in situ measurement versus chemical digestion, concluded that the measurements are indistinguishable based on data from different conspecific individuals. However, our study of contralateral muscles of the same individuals shows that the methods clearly result in statistically ...

Mammalian carnivores fall into two broad dietary groups: smaller carnivores (20 kg) that specialize in feeding on large vertebrates. We develop a model that predicts the mass-related energy budgets and limits of carnivore size within these groups.

Histological structure of esophagus. Abstract The aim of this study was to conduct a comparative evaluation of the histological and histochemical organization of the esophagus in two avian species with different feeding ecologies. A total of 6 individuals were used for this purpose (3 storks, 3 common buzzards).
