“Laws of Large Numbers” in Continuum Economies

1997
In continuum economies we have a continuum (usually [0, 1]) of agents i each with an allocation x(i) of something. If x(i) is the realization of a random variable X(i) then x(i) as a function of i can be seen as the empirical path of a stochastic process.

From the continuum to large cardinals

2015
Continuity is one of the most important concepts of mathematics and physics. This has been recognized since the time of Euclid and Archimedes, but it has also been understood that continuity raises awkward questions about infinity. To measure certain geometric quantities, such as the diagonal of the unit square, or the area of a parabolic segment ...

Large deflection dynamics and control for planar continuum robots

IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics, 2001
Abstract This paper focuses on a class of robot manipulators termed “continuum” robots — robots that exhibit behavior similar to tentacles, trunks, and snakes. In previous work, we studied details of the mechanical design, kinematics, path-planning and small-deflection dynamics for continuum robots such as the Clemson “Tentacle ...

Large Cardinals and the Continuum Hypothesis

2017
This is a survey paper which discusses the impact of large cardinals on provability of the Continuum Hypothesis (CH). It was Godel who first suggested that perhaps “strong axioms of infinity” (large cardinals) could decide interesting set-theoretical statements independent over ZFC, such as CH.

Kinematics of large deformations and continuum mechanics

2005
Abstract The strains, be they elastic or plastic, which most engineering components undergo in service are usually small, that is, <0.001 (or 0.1%). At yield, for example, a nickel alloy may have undergone a strain of about σy/E ∼ 0.002 and it is hoped that this occurs rarely in nickel-based alloy aero-engine components in service!

Gating mechanism of mechanosensitive channel of large conductance: a coupled continuum mechanical-continuum solvation approach

Biomechanics and Modeling in Mechanobiology, 2016
Gating transition of the mechanosensitive channel of large conductance (MscL) represents a good example of important biological processes that are difficult to describe using atomistic simulations due to the large (submicron) length scale and long (millisecond) time scale.

On the continuum intensity of the umbra of large sunspots

Solar Physics, 1970
Spectral observations of large sunspots during the period June 1968 – Dec. 1969 in five wavelength regions between λ 4795 and λ 6775 are discussed. Selecting the best observations of two very large sunspots, we find slightly lower umbral intensities than derived by earlier observers.

The law of large numbers with a continuum of IID random variables

Journal of Economic Theory, 1985
There are two problems with the common argument that a continuum of independent and identically distributed random variables sum to a nonrandom quantity in ''large economies''. First, it may be unintelligible in that it may call for the measure of a nonmeasurable set.

Continuum Mechanics of Large Deformation Contact

2003
In this chapter we concentrate upon the conceptual and mathematical details necessary to generalize the problem structure introduced previously for kinematically linear problems, such that our formulation for contact interaction becomes suitable for large deformation, large motion behavior.
