Trouble in the Tank: A Case Report of Fatal Scuticociliate Encephalitis in a Whitetip Reef Shark (Triaenodon obesus)

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, Volume 49, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract This case report presents a recent case of scuticociliatosis in a whitetip reef shark (Triaenodon obesus), housed at a zoo (Haus des Meeres Aqua Terra Zoo, Vienna, Austria). Clinical signs such as uncoordinated swimming and body tilt were observed prior to death.

A Characterization of the RNA Modification Response to Starvation under Low Temperatures in Large Yellow Croaker (Larimichthys crocea)

open access: yesFishes
Emerging evidence shows that N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is a post-transcriptional RNA modification that plays a vital role in regulation of gene expression, fundamental biological processes, and physiological functions.

RNA-seq liver transcriptome analysis reveals an activated MHC-I pathway and an inhibited MHC-II pathway at the early stage of vaccine immunization in zebrafish [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
BACKGROUND: Zebrafish (Danio rerio) is a prominent vertebrate model of human development and pathogenic disease and has recently been utilized to study teleost immune responses to infectious agents threatening the aquaculture industry.

Environmental Gradients Decouple Demographic and Adaptive Connectivity in a Highly Mobile Coastal Marine Species

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 35, Issue 5, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Understanding how eco‐evolutionary processes shape genetic variation and persistence in marine species with highly variable recruitment dynamics and dispersal potential remains a fundamental challenge, particularly when considering the interplay between gene flow and local adaptation.

Analysis of morphological differences in five large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea) populations [PDF]

open access: yes
To explore the morphological and phenotypic characteristics and differences among different populations of Larimichthys crocea, traditional morphological measurements were carried out on three wild populations from Zhoushan, Xiamen and Zhanjiang and two ...

Genska karakterizacija, kloniranje i ekspresija Toll-like receptora 1 mRNA nilske tilapije (Oreochromis niloticus) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are the most studied group of pathogen recognition receptor categories that detects infectious agents in vertebrates. Fish TLRs exhibit clear, distinct features, structure and a larger diversity than in other vertebrates.

Genomic Insights Into the Use of Green Tea (Camellia sinensis) as a Functional Feed Additive in Sustainable Aquaculture

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries, Volume 6, Issue 1, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Aquaculture is the fastest‐growing sector of animal food production, yet it faces increasing challenges in maintaining fish health and sustainability due to the widespread use of antibiotics and synthetic feed additives. Green tea (Camellia sinensis), a natural source of polyphenols and bioactive compounds, has gained attention as a functional

Polymorphism in Growth Hormone Gene and its Association with Growth Traits in Siniperca chuatsi [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Growth hormone (GH) is a candidate gene for growth traits in fish. In this study, we assessed associations between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in GH gene with growth traits in 357 Siniperca chuatsi individuals using high-resolution melting ...
