Surface functionalization by laser-induced periodic surface structures [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Laser Applications, 2020
In recent years, the improved understanding of the formation of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) has led to an emerging variety of applications that modify the optical, mechanical, and chemical properties of many materials.

Femtosecond laser-induced periodic surface structures

open access: yesJournal of Laser Applications, 2012
The formation of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) in different materials (metals, semiconductors, and dielectrics) upon irradiation with linearly polarized fs-laser pulses (τ~30–150 fs, λ~800 nm) in air environment is studied ...

Ultraviolet-laser-induced periodic surface structures

Physical Review B, 1989
We report the first systematic investigation into the properties of ultraviolet-laser-induced periodic surface structures that can be produced on nominally smooth surfaces. The study investigates the dependence of the patterns that are produced on Ge and Al by a KrF 249-nm laser on incident fluence and both the polarization and angle of incidence of ...

Laser Induced Periodic Surface Structure

MRS Proceedings, 1982
ABSTRACTLaser induced periodic surface structure can be understood as a universal phenomenon which occurs when high intensity pulses are absorbed near the surface of solids or liquids. The phenomenon occurs on metals, semiconductors and insulators because of the interference between the incident pulse and an induced “radiation remnant”.

Laser Induced Periodic Structures on Polymer Surfaces

Materials and Manufacturing Processes, 1994
Abstract Subhalf micron (0.2 nm) space and amplitude linear periodic structures and an array of dot images are obtained with the Nd:YAG laser irradiation on Kapton polyimide films, poly(ethylene terephthalate) films, spin-coated polyimide films and others.

Laser-Induced Periodic Surface Structures (LIPSS)

2020
Laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) are a universal phenomenon and can be generated on almost any material by irradiation with linearly polarized radiation. This chapter reviews the current state in the field of LIPSS, which are formed in a “self-ordered” way and are often accompanying materials processing applications.

Laser-induced periodic surface structuring of biopolymers

Applied Physics A, 2012
We report here on a systematic study about the formation of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) on biopolymers. Self-standing films of the biopolymers chitosan, starch and the blend of chitosan with the synthetic polymer poly (vinyl pyrrolidone), PVP, were irradiated in air with linearly polarized laser beams at 193, 213 and 266 nm, with ...

Anomalous laser-induced periodic surface structures

Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 1989
The authors report the results of a study into the formation of periodic damage patterns on nominally smooth Ge surfaces using s-polarised laser light from a KrF excimer laser working at 249 nm. Dependent upon the incident fluence and to a lesser extent the angle of incidence, two types of pattern are found.
