Collisional Redistribution Laser Cooling of a High Pressure Atomic Gas

open access: yes, 2011
We describe measurements demonstrating laser cooling of an atomic gas by means of collisional redistribution of radiation. The experiment uses rubidium atoms in the presence of several hundred bar of argon buffer gas pressure.

Application of Raman and Photoluminescence Spectroscopy to MgO‐C Refractories

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Visible to near infrared luminescence of MgO is studied on MgO‐C bricks and nominally pure MgO powder, with focus on two similar sharp high‐intensity signals, at 699 and 871 nm, each surrounded by symmetrical sidebands. The nature of these sidebands is investigated by temperature‐dependent spectroscopic measurements, confirming phonon involvement by ...

Longitudinal and transverse cooling of relativistic electron beams in intense laser pulses

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2015
With the emergence in the next few years of a new breed of high power laser facilities, it is becoming increasingly important to understand how interacting with intense laser pulses affects the bulk properties of a relativistic electron beam.

Comparing cavity and ordinary laser cooling within the Lamb-Dicke regime

open access: yes, 2010
Cavity-mediated cooling has the potential to become one of the most efficient techniques to cool molecular species down to very low temperatures. In this paper we analyse cavity cooling with single-laser driving for relatively large cavity decay rates ...

Thermomechanical Fatigue and Creep–Fatigue Interaction of Inconel 718 Additively Manufactured by Laser Beam Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Thermomechanical fatigue tests of laser beam powder bed fusion (PBF‐LB) Inconel 718 show that the additively manufactured material reaches almost the lifetimes of conventionally‐rolled material under no‐dwell conditions. Introducing dwell times at the maximum temperature markedly reduces the lifetimes due to pronounced grain boundary sliding associated

Laser cooling with electromagnetically induced transparency: Application to trapped samples of ions or neutral atoms

open access: yes, 2001
A novel method of ground state laser cooling of trapped atoms utilizes the absorption profile of a three (or multi-) level system which is tailored by a quantum interference.

Laser Cooling Positronium with Broadband Laser Pulses

open access: yesJournal of Physics: Conference Series
Abstract The first successful demonstration of broadband laser cooling of positronium (Ps) atoms, obtained within the AEgIS experiment at CERN, is presented here. By employing a custom-designed pulsed alexandrite laser system at 243 nm featuring long-duration pulses of 70 ns and an energy able to saturate the 13S–23P transition over the ...

Sol–Gel Derived Polymer Precursors for Stereolithography of ZrC

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
ZrC is a critical material target for extreme temperature conditions. This report describes a protocol for preparing ZrC ceramics via stereolithography and examines the impact of the polymer matrix on carbothermal reduction and mechanical stability of 3D printed ZrC.

Ground state cooling in a bad cavity

open access: yes, 2006
We study the mechanical effects of light on an atom trapped in a harmonic potential when an atomic dipole transition is driven by a laser and it is strongly coupled to a mode of an optical resonator.
