Semiconductor optical amplifiers: performance and applications in optical packet switching [Invited] [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) are a versatile core technology and the basis for the implementation of a number of key functionalities central to the evolution of highly wavelength-agile all-optical networks.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Spectral noise in quantum frequency down-conversion from the visible to the telecommunication C-band

open access: yes, 2019
We report a detailed study of the noise properties of a visible-to-telecom photon frequency converter based on difference frequency generation (DFG). The device converts 580 nm photons to 1541 nm using a strong pump laser at 930 nm, in a periodically ...

AAA+ protein unfoldases—the Moirai of the proteome

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
AAA+ unfoldases are essential molecular motors that power protein degradation and disaggregation. This review integrates recent cryo‐electron microscopy (cryo‐EM) structures and single‐molecule biophysical data to reconcile competing models of substrate translocation.

Nonlinear absorption in lithium triborate frequency converters for high-power ultrafast lasers

open access: yesOptics Express, 2022
We report on an analysis of the nonlinear absorption in lithium triborate (LBO) used for second and third harmonic generation of ultrashort laser pulses at average powers in the order of kW and with sub-picosecond pulse duration. Thermographic imaging of the LBO crystals together with a simple analytical model revealed the presence of nonlinear ...

Infrared laser sampling of low volumes combined with shotgun lipidomics reveals lipid markers in palatine tonsil carcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Nanosecond infrared laser (NIRL) low‐volume sampling combined with shotgun lipidomics uncovers distinct lipidome alterations in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) of the palatine tonsil. Several lipid species consistently differentiate tumor from healthy tissue, highlighting their potential as diagnostic markers.

Reactive SPS of Al2O3–RE:YAG (RE = Ce; Ce+Gd) composite ceramic phosphors

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Ceramics, 2023
Ultrafine-grained Al2O3–rare earth:yttrium aluminium garnet (Al2O3–RE:YAG) (RE = Ce; Ce+Gd) composite ceramics were obtained for the first time by reactive spark plasma sintering (SPS) using commercially available initial oxide powders. The effect of key

Measurement of the stimulated carrier lifetime in semiconductor optical amplifiers by four-wave mixing of polarized ASE noise [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
We present a simple experiment aimed at measuring the stimulated carrier lifetime in semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA's). The technique relies on polarization-resolved nearly degenerate four-wave mixing (FWM) of a laser source with an amplified ...

Raman‐based label‐free microscopic analysis of the pancreas in living zebrafish larvae

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Forward stimulated Raman scattering (F‐SRS) and epi coherent anti‐Stokes Raman scattering (E‐CARS) allow label‐free discrimination of distinct subcellular structures in the pancreas of living zebrafish larvae. Given the straightforward applicability, we anticipate broad implementation of Raman microscopy in other organs and across various biomedical ...

Demonstration of Power-over-Fiber with Watts of Output Power Capabilities over Kilometers or at Cryogenic Temperatures

open access: yesPhotonics
We demonstrate the use of laser diodes and multijunction photovoltaic power converters to efficiently deliver watts of electrical power for long-distance or cryogenic applications. Transmission through single-mode and multi-mode fibers at the wavelengths
