Biodegradable 3D‐Printable and Coatable Antifouling Composites for Marine Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Marine biofouling damages submerged surfaces and raises greenhouse gas emissions. Biodegradable antifouling biocomposites were developed by hot‐mixing beeswax, Tween 80, and calcium stearate or stearic acid. Adjusting the component ratio enables processing via hot‐pressing, 3D‐printing, or dip‐coating.

Development and verification of a laser profilometer for microtexture assessment of pavement surfaces [PDF]

open access: yes
Surface friction is one of the most important aspects of safety for runway pavements. Consequently, accurate friction assessment can inform safe aircraft operations. One of the ways to increase the accuracy of friction assessment is to use texture tests.

Experimental Analysis of Laser Micromachining of Microchannels in Common Microfluidic Substrates

open access: yesMicromachines, 2021
Laser micromachining technique offers a promising alternative method for rapid production of microfluidic devices. However, the effect of process parameters on the channel geometry and quality of channels on common microfluidic substrates has not been ...

Beyond Thin Film Limits—Superhard and Hydrogen‐Free Amorphous Carbon Coatings With Over 100 µm Thickness

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
For the first time, an extreme‐thick laser‐arc PVD ta‐C (DLC) coating exceeding 100 µm is demonstrated, opening up new possibilities for ultra‐high load bearing capacity. This superhard amorphous carbon architecture combines >50% sp3 bonding, robust adhesion and self‐supporting performance, shielding substrates from plastic flow under extreme contact ...

Airborne 3D-profilometer

open access: yes, 1995
Measurement of dimensions of inaccessible objects remains a challenge in spite of new technologies available. The authors approached the problem with a photogrammetric method using a laser-camera combination installed in a helicopter.

High‐Modulus Skeleton‐Reinforced PDMS Microstamps for Precision Transfer Printing of Microscale Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Elastomeric micropillars bend under contact loading, sliding microscale devices out of alignment during transfer printing. A hybrid PDMS stamp embeds a high‐modulus skeleton within each pillar while retaining a compliant contact surface. The reinforcement confines pillar deformation, suppressing interfacial sliding and preserving array registration on ...

Laser Profilometry of Polymeric Materials [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
Unlike the mechanical stylus profilometer, the laser profilometer does not damage the surface of soft materials. However, the accuracy of autofocusing of the laser profilometer is not always sensitive enough to discriminate the material/air interface ...

From Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR) to Intrinsic Water Vapor Permeability (WVP)

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Breathable membranes can appear less permeable when the measurement apparatus limits vapor transport. A calibrated four‐step model describes membrane permeation and apparatus effects as resistances in series under a common chemical‐potential driving force.

Numerical Simulations of Laser-Driven Cratering Experiments into Porous Graphite

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2018
We present the results of an experimental campaign conducted on the LULI2000 laser facility. Semi-infinite targets of a commercial grade of porous graphite were submitted to high-power laser irradiation inorder to generate craters. A 15 ns pulse duration
