Laser surface modification of biomedical alloys [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
This study investigated the effects of high speed laser surface modification on 316L stainless steel and Ti-6Al-4V for biomedical implants application. Laser processing was carried out in an inert argon environment using a 1.5 kW CO2 laser.

Pointing stabilization of a 1 Hz high-power laser via machine learning

open access: yesHigh Power Laser Science and Engineering
High-power lasers are vital for particle acceleration, imaging, fusion and materials processing, requiring precise control and high-energy delivery. Laser plasma accelerators (LPAs) demand laser positional stability at focus to ensure consistent electron

Performance Analysis of Abradable Coating Systems for Aircraft Gas Turbines

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Three CoNiCrAlY/YSZ/MgAl2O4 abradable liner configurations on a nickel‐superalloy are evaluated by thermal‐gradient cycling and incursion tests. Laser ablation of the bondcoat and/or Y2O3‐stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) intermediate layer increases mechanical interlocking and bonding for thick topcoats.

Performance of a compact, continuous-wave terahertz based on a quantum-cascade laser

open access: yes, 2010
We report on the development of a compact, easy-to-use terahertz radiation source, which combines a quantum cascade laser (QCL) with a compact, low-input-power Stirling ...

High‐Temperature Nanoindentation of Metals: Assessing Thermal Drift, Frame Compliance, and Chemical Composition Effects on the Reported Mechanical Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Do not let thermal drift and instrument artifacts deceive high‐temperature nanoindentation results. We compare classical Oliver–Pharr and automatic image recognition analyses across steels and a Ni alloy to quantify these effects. Accounting for artifacts reveals systematic softening with temperature, while Cr and Ni additions boost resistance ...

Geometrical scale-factor stabilization of square cavity ring laser gyroscopes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Large frame ring laser gyros performances are ultimately limited by the instabilities of their geometrical parameters. We present the experimental activity on the GP2 ring laser gyro.

Lasers, stability, and numbers

open access: yesPhysica Scripta, 2018
Can insight familiar from quantum physics be used to uncover unsuspected features of classical dynamical systems? Is it possible to discover signatures of familiar quantum concepts in the realm of classical dynamics? For the wide class of systems governed by polynomial equations of motion, this paper argues that the concept of entanglement has a purely

Current Status and Challenges in Data Collection for Aerospace Coatings Deposited by Plasma Spraying

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
An innovative approach has been integrated into the GRENAT project to optimize plasma spraying and coating performance. Raw materials are accelerated and melted in the plasma generated by torches, creating coatings. Monitoring sensors collect process data which are combined with ex situ characterization data.

Experimental Characterisation of Swirl Stabilized Annular Stratified Flames [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
A burner for investigating lean stratified premixed flames propagating in intense isotropic turbulence has been developed. Lean pre-mixtures of methane at different equivalence ratios are divided between two concentric co-flows to obtain annular ...
