Lateral-distortional buckling of continuously restrained columns

Journal of Constructional Steel Research, 1997
Abstract A rational model for predicting the elastic buckling load of thin-walled Isection columns, restrained fully against translation and elastically against twist at one flange, is presented. The energy method used results in a third-order eigenproblem.

Effect of pitting corrosion on local strength of hold frames of bulk carriers (2nd Report)—Lateral-distortional buckling and local face buckling

Marine Structures, 2004
Abstract Pitting corrosion is typical corrosion observed on coated hold frames of bulk carriers which exclusively carry coal and iron ore. In order to secure the safety of these types of bulk carriers, it is important to understand the effect of pitting corrosion on local strength of hold frames.

Lateral-Distortional Buckling of Hollow Flange Beams

Journal of Structural Engineering, 1997
While the flanges of cold-formed hollow flange beams (HFBs) are very stiff torsionally, their webs are comparatively flexible, and may allow web distortion effects to reduce their resistances to lateral buckling. There is no simple formulation for predicting the effects of web distortion on the lateral buckling of HFBs.

Lateral Distortional Buckling: Predicting Elastic Critical Stress

Journal of Structural Engineering, 1988
The problem of restrained lateral beam buckling is being treated in this paper. The restraint represents complete lateral and arbitrary continuous rotational restraint of one flange, the latter is represented by the spring stiffness \IC\N\d0. A simple theory, in which the problem is transformed into an ordinary fourth order differential eigenvalue ...

Elastic lateral distortional buckling analysis of cantilever I-beams

Ships and Offshore Structures, 2013
A study of elastic lateral distortional buckling of cantilever monosymmetrical I-beams is presented. The method assumes that the flange cross-sections remain straight (undistorted) during buckling, but that the web is free to distort. Three different load patterns are considered: an end moment load, a uniformly distributed lateral pressure and an end ...

Elastic lateral-distortional buckling of I-beams and the Meck Plot

Structural Engineering and Mechanics, 2011
Meck Plot is an adapted version of the well-known Southwell method to the case of lateral-torsional buckling, which indeed reflects the physical inter-dependence of lateral flexure (lateral displacement) and torsion (rotation) in the structure. In the recent reported studies, it has been shown experimentally and theoretically that lateral displacement ...

Lateral Distortional Buckling of Monosymmetric Beams under Point Load

Journal of Engineering Mechanics, 1996
Based on a new expression for the work done due to buckling, a computationally efficient method is presented for the lateral distortional buckling of monosymmetric beams. The method requires a knowledge of the stress distribution in the beam. For a simply supported monosymmetric beam subjected to a concentrated vertical load, a simplified stress ...

Lateral–distortional buckling of monorails

Engineering Structures, 2009
Abstract This paper is concerned with the elastic lateral–distortional (LD) buckling of single span steel monorail I-beams and its influence on their design strengths. The distortion of a slender web reduces the elastic buckling resistance of an intermediate length beam below its flexural–torsional (FT) resistance.

Lateral-distortional buckling of tee-section beams

Thin-Walled Structures, 1990
Abstract A fine element method that incorporates plate behaviour is developed for modelling the lateral-distortional buckling of tee-section beams. The method is shown to agree well with independent buckling results for tee-beams. Since relatively few elements are needed to obtain satisfactory convergence, the method is efficient computationally. The

A New Formula for Predicting Lateral Distortional Buckling Strength of I-Beams Subjected to Different Loading Conditions

International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics, 2022
Lateral distortional buckling (LDB) mode has been investigated as one of the failure modes in steel I-beams. The LDB mode in such beams is known by simultaneous lateral deflection, twist, and cross-sectional change due to web distortion. However, many studies have been conducted to investigate the behavior of this failure mode; so far, no formula has ...
