Area-Specific Regulation of Quiescent Neural Stem Cells by Notch3 in the Adult Mouse Subependymal Zone [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
In the adult mammalian brain, neural stem cells (NSCs) generate new neurons throughout the mammal's lifetime. The balance between quiescence and active cell division among NSCs is crucial in producing appropriate numbers of neurons while maintaining the ...

Translational Considerations for Injectable Biomaterials and Bioscaffolds to Repair and Regenerate Brain Tissue

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
The repair and regeneration of brain tissue faces both biological and technical challenges. Injectable bioscaffolds offer new opportunities to stimulate tissue regrowth in the brain by recruiting neural stem cells. Here, the translational issues are reviewed that need to be address to advance this promising new therapeutic approach from the bench to ...

Association between cerebral atrophy and osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2019
PURPOSE:Osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs) have a serious impact on people's health and quality of life. The purpose of this study was to analyze brain volume in patients with osteoporosis using brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI ...

Rare Case of Young Patient with Intraventricular Angiomatous Meningioma

open access: yesBrazilian Neurosurgery, 2017
Pediatric meningiomas are rare and account for only 2.2% of the central nervous system (CNS) tumors. In this age group, they are more frequently located in atypical sites, such as, mainly, the ventricular system, with a frequency of 8.8 to 13.6%.

A 3D Astrocyte Microenvironment Model Enables Rapid Ca2+‐Resolved Analysis and Therapeutic Modulation of Oxidative Neuroinflammation

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This work presents ARC‐3D, a soft 3D model that recreates how brain support cells, called astrocytes, react to oxidative stress. The system visualizes rapid calcium changes and inflammatory signals, and shows how the drug KDS12025 can protect cells from damage. ARC‐3D offers a simple, reliable way to study early drivers of brain inflammation.

Brain ventricle and choroid plexus morphology as predictor of treatment response in major depression: Findings from the EMBARC study

open access: yesBrain, Behavior, & Immunity - Health
Recent observations suggest a role of the volume of the cerebral ventricle volume, corpus callosum (CC) segment volume, in particular that of the central-anterior part, and choroid plexus (CP) volume for treatment resistance of major depressive disorder (

CT and MRI Features of Pediatric-Aged Colloid Cysts: Report of Two Cases

open access: yesCase Reports in Radiology, 2017
A 10-year-old boy with the history of headache, anorexia, and vomiting was referred to our department to undergo a brain CT scan. CT images demonstrated a well-defined, rounded, hyperdense lesion at the level of the foramen of Monro causing moderate ...

Evaluation of local and global atrophy measurement techniques with simulated Alzheimer's disease data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The main goal of this work was to evaluate several well-known methods which provide global (BSI and SIENA) or local (Jacobian integration) estimates of atrophy in brain structures using Magnetic Resonance images.
