Construction of simplified design p-y curves for liquefied soils [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
In practice, laterally loaded piles are most often modelled using a ‘Beam-on-Nonlinear-Winkler-Foundation’ (BNWF) approach. While well calibrated p-y curves exist for non-liquefied soils (e.g. soft clay and sands), the profession still lacks reliable p-y

SI‐bioATRP in Mesoporous Silica for Size‐Exclusion Driven Local Polymer Placement

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
An enzyme‐catalyzed surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI‐bioATRP) of an anionic monomer within mesoporous silica particles, using hemoglobin as a catalyst, allows for controlling the location of the formed polymer via size‐exclusion effects between the nanopores and the biomacromolecules, thereby opening routes to functional ...

Single‐Crystalline Lateral p‐SnS/n‐SnSe van der Waals Heterostructures by Vapor Transport Growth with In Situ Bi Doping

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In‐situ doping during growth of SnSe and subsequent attachment of SnS produces high‐quality lateral pn‐heterojunctions between van der Waals semiconductors. Electron beam induced current measurements demonstrate electrically active pn‐junctions, paving the way for devices that harness charge separation at lateral interfaces in layered heterostructures.

Gram‐Scale Production of Iron Oxide Rubik‐Cube Nanoparticles: New Tools for the Clinical Translation of Magnetic Hyperthermia and Magnetic Particle Imaging

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work reports the first gram‐scale solvothermal synthesis of ‘Rubik's cube’ nanoparticles—cubic, dendritic multicore structures with tuneable sizes and exceptional magnetic heating performance. Featuring iron oxide single‐domain character, with low coercivity fields, high magnetization, and strong MPI signals, they enable viscosity‐independent ...

Influence of Vertical Loading on Behavior of Laterally Loaded Foundation Piles: A Review

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2020
The majority of installed offshore wind turbines are supported on large-diameter, open-ended steel pile foundations, known as monopiles. These piles are subjected to vertical and lateral loads while in service.
