Contribution to the distribution of spiders with significant medical importance (Araneae: Loxosceles and Latrodectus) in Iran, with a new record for the country [PDF]

open access: yesIranian Journal of Animal Biosystematics, 2014
A faunistic review is given on the Iranian medically important spiders of two genera Loxosceles and Latrodectus. Latrodectus cinctus Blackwall, 1865 is reported for the first time from Iran (and for the second time from Asia) and is replaced with the ...

Latrodectus Envenomation in Greece [PDF]

open access: yesThe Permanente Journal, 2014
During the summer period 2011-2012, seven widow spider bites in Greece were reported to the Hellenic Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Widow spiders (in the genus Latrodectus) are found all over the world, including Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and the US. Alpha-latrotoxin (main mammalian toxin) causes the toxic effects observed in humans.

Control Strategies in Guanine Biocrystallization

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, Volume 138, Issue 18, 27 April 2026.
Biological guanine crystals produce spectacular photonic phenomena in animals and hold great promise as new, sustainable optical materials. We review how organisms precisely control the structure, morphologies, and resulting optical properties of these crystals using a set of ingenious ‘design’ strategies, including control of pH, template‐directed ...

Unravelling Evolutionary Dynamics of Female Sexual Cannibalism and Male Reproductive Strategies in Spiders

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Sexual cannibalism (SC), where one mating partner consumes the other in the context of mating, is especially prevalent among spiders. However, the evolution of SC in spiders is still not fully understood. We review key hypotheses for SC and explore how female‐initiated SC has driven the evolution of various male counter‐adaptations to mitigate its ...
