Substrate Preferences for Attaching Gumfoot Lines inLatrodectus geometricus(Araneae: Theridiidae)

Entomological News, 2014
ABSTRACT: Spider web construction is energetically costly, but it plays an important role in survivorship and reproduction. Studies have revealed facultative changes in spider web construction to adjust to available attachment sites. We used rectangular cardboard frames and two contrasting substrates to determine preferences in placement of gumfoot ...

Latrodectus geometricus (Aranea: Theridiidae) envenoming: Rapid resolution of symptoms following F(ab’)2 antivenom therapy

Toxicon, 2020
The Brown Widow spider (Latrodectus geometricus) is an invasive species whose geographic range has been expanding worldwide. It is a relative species of the Black Widow and Red-backed spiders of the genus Latrodectus. Despite its broad geographic distribution cases of Brown Widow envenomation have rarely been documented. The venom of L.

Early development of the anterior body region of the grey widow spider Latrodectus geometricus Koch, 1841 (Theridiidae, Araneae)

Arthropod Structure & Development, 2009
We document the early morphogenesis of Latrodectus geometricus, particularly of the anterior body region. Significant changes in the development of the external prosomal structures revealed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images include: (1) reorganisation of each pre-cheliceral lobe by subdivision and internalisation of its central area; (2 ...

Challenges in the diagnosis and management of brown widow spider (Latrodectus geometricus) envenomation in dogs

Concilium
This study reports two cases of araneism in dogs caused by the bite of the brown widow spider (Latrodectus geometricus), one of which resulted in death. The first case presented mild signs, successfully treated with medication and ice packs. The second case, more severe, involved exacerbated local signs such as extensive edema and ecchymosis, and ...

Brown widow (Latrodectus geometricus) major ampullate silk protein and its material properties.

Biomedical sciences instrumentation, 2004
Major ampullate (dragline) silk is the main web component as well as the silk that spiders use for a lifeline when they fall. This silk has a breaking stress of 4.6 GPa, which is similar to that of Kevlar. The majority of the previous mechanical testing studies involved the major ampullate silk from orb-weaving spiders.
