Nature of the interactions between hypocrealean fungi and the mutualistic fungus of leaf-cutter ants [PDF]
Leaf-cutter ants cultivate and feed on the mutualistic fungus, Leucoagaricus gongylophorus, which is threatened by parasitic fungi of the genus Escovopsis. The mechanism of Escovopsis parasitism is poorly understood. Here, we assessed the nature of the antagonism of different Escovopsis species against its host.

Enforcing environmental law in the Amazon
Abstract This article identifies the underlying obstacles to enforcement of laws against environmental crimes such as illegal logging, mining and ranching. With four departments (provinces) from Colombia as case studies, it assesses enforcement of the country's main environmental law, Law 2111, which is one of Latin America's strongest. The article has

: Atta sexdens rubropilosa (leaf-cutter ants) has a symbiotic association with a fungus and has a negative interaction with other fungi due to parasitism of the fungus cultivated by ants; also, there are several other fungi with no exact known role ...

Smart label design. ABSTRACT The growing interest to ensure food safety requires the development of smart indicator systems that are capable of real‐time tracking of spoilage, particularly for perishable foods. Therefore, the purpose of this work is to fabricate eco‐friendly, industrially viable pH‐sensitive smart films via solvent‐free melt ...

The mitochondrial genome of the leaf-cutter ant Atta laevigata: a mitogenome with a large number of intergenic spacers. [PDF]
In this paper we describe the nearly complete mitochondrial genome of the leaf-cutter ant Atta laevigata, assembled using transcriptomic libraries from Sanger and Illumina next generation sequencing (NGS), and PCR products.

Tropical forests are rapidly declining. One promising strategy to reverse the loss of tropical forest is the establishment of agroforestry on open land. We combined interviews with biodiversity surveys to learn general lessons from success and nonsuccess stories of the establishment of open‐land‐derived coffee agroforests in one of the world's ...

Ant nesting ecology of leaf-cutter ants in altitude natural fields, southern Brazil
This work aimed to study the ecological aspects of the nesting process carried out by Atta and Acromyrmex leaf-cutter ants in the Campos de Lages Microregion, Brazil. In each municipality 4 equidistant observation sites were established, each point representing an anthill, for a total of 72 anthills.

Metagenomic and metaproteomic insights into bacterial communities in leaf-cutter ant fungus gardens [PDF]
Abstract Herbivores gain access to nutrients stored in plant biomass largely by harnessing the metabolic activities of microbes. Leaf-cutter ants of the genus Atta are a hallmark example; these dominant neotropical herbivores cultivate symbiotic fungus gardens on large quantities of fresh plant forage. As the external digestive system of
