Life table analysis of leaf fall in Tasmanian cool temperate forests

Australian Journal of Ecology, 1984
AbstractThe annual leaf fall of three species of cool temperate forest trees was examined for two different consecutive seasons at two localities in Tasmania. The reverse summation of the sequential fall of leaves throughout an annual cycle provided a population biomass that was amenable to life table analyses.Rates of leaf fall were compared between ...

Optimal pinnate leaf-like network/matrix structure for enhanced conductive cooling

Energy Conversion and Management, 2015
Heat generated in electronic devices has to be effectively removed because excessive temperature strongly impairs their performance and reliability. Embedding a high thermal conductivity network into an electronic device is an effective method to conduct the generated heat to the outside.

Tradeoffs between leaf cooling and hydraulic safety in a dominant arid land riparian tree species

Plant, Cell & Environment, 2022
AbstractLeaf carbon gain optimization in hot environments requires balancing leaf thermoregulation with avoiding excessive water loss via transpiration and hydraulic failure. The tradeoffs between leaf thermoregulation and transpirational water loss can determine the ecological consequences of heat waves that are increasing in frequency and intensity ...

Utilizing fan cooling to reduce leaf temperatures in Ginseng cultivation

Journal of Applied Horticulture
Due to climate change, there have been more frequent heat waves and a notable rise in global temperature. This change hinders ginseng’s cultivation, a crop that grows well in cooler and shaded environments. This study evaluated the effectiveness of air-circulation fans in alleviating heat stress and lowering the leaf temperatures when cultivating ...

Optimal palmate leaf-like conductive network for cooling a heat-generating volume

Journal of Applied Physics, 2018
With the development of high-density integration and the miniaturization of electronic devices, extracting the heat generated in electronic devices has become a major issue. Conductive cooling is an effective method to extract the heat generated by electronic devices.

NUTRIENT SOLUTION COOLING AND ITS EFFECT ON TEMPERATURE OF LEAF LETTUCE IN HYDROPONIC SYSTEM

Acta Horticulturae, 1996
The heat transfer characteristics of a hydroponic system were experimentally verified after theoretical establishment and the effect of nutrient solution cooling on the plant temperature was investigated. About 96 percent of the total heat flow transferred from culture bed to nutrient solution was the conductive heat through planting board and ...

A leaf-like structured membrane for highly efficient and persistent radiative cooling

Materials Horizons
A leaf-inspired double-layer membrane was designed, exhibiting 99.3% solar reflectivity and ∼95% mid-infrared emissivity. It remained stable under 7000 MJ m−2 ultraviolet radiation, presenting a new strategy for passive radiative cooling.

Experimental study on effect of vacuum pre-cooling for post-harvest leaf lettuce

Research on Crops, 2014
According to the physical properties of leaf lettuce and its heat and mass transfer mechanism in vacuum pre-cooling process, the pre-cooling temperature, pressure and volume of spray-applied water were verified throughout the experiment. The key factors affecting the water removal and storage quality of leaf lettuce during vacuum pre-cooling were the ...

Cool Night Temperatures Alter Leaf Starch and Photosystem II Chlorophyll Fluorescence in Cotton

Agronomy Journal, 1993
AbstractCotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) growth and reproduction are sensitive to cool temperatures, but few studies are available on specific metabolic responses to low temperature stress. We studied the relationship between starch levels and Photosystem II (PSII) function in cotton plants grown in growth chambers to determine if low temperature stress ...
