The intramandibular gland of leaf-cutting ants (Atta sexdens rubropilosa Forel 1908)
Micron, 2006The eusociality developed in Hymenoptera and Isoptera is driven by an efficient interaction between exocrine glands and jointed appendages, both in close interaction with the environment. In this context, the mandible of ants plays an important role, since, in addition to being the main jointed appendage, it possess glandular functions.

InAtta sexdens rubropilosa, a strongly polyethic and polymorphic species of myrmicine ant, the contents of the mandibular gland vary with caste. Small workers of head width 0.5-1.8 mm, those generally engaged in duties inside the nest, contain chiefly 4-methyl-3-heptanone. Larger workers, those chiefly engaged in foraging, and the soldier caste contain

Functional morphology of the metapleural gland in the leaf-cutting ant Acromyrmex octospinosus
Insectes Sociaux, 2001The metapleural gland is unique for ants and its main function is the production of antibiotics. The gland is considered to be of particular significance in leaf-cutting ants, which need to protect both themselves and their clonally reproducing fungal symbiont from pathogens and microbial competitors.

Morphology and ultrastructure of the leaf salt glands of Odyssea paucinervis (Stapf) (Poaceae)
Flora - Morphology, Distribution, Functional Ecology of Plants, 2002Summary Odyssea paucinervis is a rhizomatous, perennial, C 4 grass, which is widely distributed in southern Africa on saline or alkaline soils. Salt glands are uniformly localised within grooves on both surfaces of the lamina as well as the leaf sheath.

Abstract Salt glands, which exclude salt solution to avoid tissue toxicity, have been reported for halophytes species of Primulaceae. Jacquinia armillaris is a species of Primulaceae that occurs in saline coastal environments in the Neotropics and possesses peltate trichomes sunken in leaf surface.

In Acromyrmex octospinosus leaf-cutting ants the metapleural glands produce an array of antibiotic compounds that serve as a general defence against unwanted microbes on the cuticle. Leaf-cutting ants also grow mutualistic Pseudonocardiaceae bacteria on their cuticle that produce antibiotics controlling a microfungal parasite of their fungus gardens ...

Leaf glands act as nectaries in Diplopterys pubipetala (Malpighiaceae).
Plant biology (Stuttgart, Germany), 2011Leaf glands of Diplopterys pubipetala were studied with light and electron microscopy. Aspects of their secretion, visitors and phenology were also recorded. Glands occur along the margin, at the apex and at the base of the leaf blade. All the glands begin secretion when the leaf is still very young, and secretion continues during leaf expansion.

Given the importance of the metapleural gland in ants, the present study aimed at describing it in minor, media, and major workers of Atta laevigata, focusing their physiology using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), histologic, and histochemical techniques.

Ultrastructure of secretory leaf glands ofRuta chalepensisL.
Bulletin de la Société Botanique de France. Actualités Botaniques, 1982SummaryTwo types of leaf glands occur in Ruta chalepensis, those in the parenchyma, and others close to the epidermis. The former are schizolysigenous, the latter lysigenous cavities. In the former separation of the central cells throught breakdown of the middle lamellae is followed by lysis of these cells.

Effect of drought on leaf gland secretion of the mangrove Avicennia germinans L.
Trees, 2002This study assessed the effects of salinity changes over space and time upon leaf gland secretion in Avicennia germinans trees growing naturally in an area featuring markedly seasonal rainfall. Soil π (≈ soil ψ; MPa) during the wet season was –0.95±0.05 and –2.12±0.08 at low and high salinity sites, respectively.
