Faunistic Study of Auchenorrhyncha in Olive Orchards in Greece, Including First Records of Species

open access: yesAgronomy
The study of Auchenorrhyncha species composition in Greek olive orchards is crucial due to the potential threat of Xylella fastidiosa invading the region. Recent studies have begun exploring agricultural landscapes, particularly olive and citrus orchards.

Hemipteran vectors of stylet‐borne plant viruses: Aphids lead the charge

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Among all sap‐feeding hemipterans, aphids stand out by far as the most important vectors of noncirculative plant viruses. Compared to whiteflies and mealybugs, aphids’ highly specialized stylet anatomy and distinct feeding behaviors contribute, together with other features of their biology, to their remarkable efficiency in transmitting stylet‐borne ...

Elucidating R‐gene‐mediated resistance to wheat dwarf virus in Triticum aestivum genotypes

open access: yesAnnals of Applied Biology, EarlyView.
This study investigates R‐gene‐mediated resistance to wheat dwarf virus (WDV) among different wheat genotypes. Following inoculation with Psammotettix alienus (leafhoppers) and the subsequent appearance of characteristic symptoms such as yellowing and dwarfing, phenotypic responses were evaluated alongside molecular analyses, including quantification ...

1164. Echinacea simulata McGregor

open access: yesCurtis's Botanical Magazine, EarlyView.
Summary Echinacea simulata McGregor (Compositae: Heliantheae: Zinniinae) is described and illustrated. Notes are provided for the species' cultivation, propagation, likely pests and diseases, and availability. A full synonymy is given, along with type citations and known presence of type material, together with relevant notes. Statements of the species'

Structural Features and Phylogenetic Implications of 11 New Mitogenomes of Typhlocybinae (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae)

open access: yesInsects, 2021
To explore the characteristics of mitogenomes and discuss the phylogenetic relationships and molecular evolution of the six tribes within Typhlocybinae, 11 complete mitogenomes are newly sequenced and comparatively analyzed.

Spectral Characterization of the Life Stages and Physiological Responses of Diatraea saccharalis Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) Larvae Parasitized by Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae)

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
Hyperspectral proximal sensing was used to characterize the life stages and physiological responses of Diatraea saccharalis and to detect parasitism by Cotesia flavipes. Distinct spectral signatures differentiated eggs, larval instars, pupae, and adults, as well as live, dead, and parasitized larvae.

Host plant richness and abundance drive populations of a super‐generalist xylem‐feeding insect

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
Philaenus spumarius abundance was assessed across 93 sites and four habitat types (olive groves, vineyards, meadows, and field margins) within eight heterogeneous agricultural landscapes over the year. In spring, nymph abundance was positively associated with herbaceous plant species richness and vegetation cover, highlighting that even super ...

Aglaenita (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Neocoelidiinae): a new species from Brazil

open access: yesZoologia (Curitiba), 2011
Aglaenita Spinola, 1850 comprises fourteen species, all occurring in Brazil, including a new species, A. hambletoni sp. nov., which is described herein. The genus is close to Biza Walker, 1858 and Megacoelidia Kramer & Linnavuori, 1959.

Two new species of Hyalojassini (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Iassinae) to the genera Comanopa Blocker and Gehundra Blocker, description of the male of G. sordida (Baker) and key to species

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Taxonomy, 2021
Comanopa Blocker, 1979 and Gehundra Blocker, 1976 are small and poorly known genera of leafhoppers, previously comprising four and five species, respectively. In this study, two new species are proposed: Comanopa mananciensis sp. nov.

Arthropod niche differentiation linked to grazing‐induced sward islets in intensively managed agricultural pasture

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
In a given number of samples, grassland sward islets contain more species of arthropods than the surrounding sward. When corrected for abundance, there is no difference in species richness, suggesting that the effect of islets might purely be to concentrate arthropods. The community structure differences indicated by non‐metric multidimensional scaling
