Effect of periodic strain on the leaky modes in single-mode fiber

Applied Optics, 1988
The effect of periodic strain on the beat wavelength between the guided LP(01) and the leaky LP(11) modes is approximated around the LP(11) mode cutoff. An abrupt change of the beat wavelength as a function of optical wavelength signifies the onset of the cutoff region.

Failure of the leaky-mode representation near the waveguide mode cutoff

Optics Letters, 1995
Improper eigenmodes of the planar waveguide dispersion relation, or leaky modes, are often used to represent the nonbound optical field in planar waveguides. Here we show that the improper leaky solutions give an inadequate description of the nonbound field for the important case of a waveguide just below cutoff.

Leaky modes on a dielectric waveguide: orthogonality and excitation

Applied Optics, 1976
Because they are not proper spectral modes, leaky modes do not obey the usual power orthogonality relations for an ideal waveguide. Two methods for circumventing this problem are presented in this paper. One approach is to use the fact that weakly leaky modes are approximately power orthogonal within a restricted region of space to define a new set of ...

Tunneling leaky modes in a parabolic index fiber

Applied Optics, 1976
Single or close to single tunneling leaky modes have been prism coupled into nominally parabolic index SEL-FOC fibers with effective efficiencies on the order of 10%. The mode parameters fit fairly well to an analytical continuation of the solutions to Gloge and Marcatili's equations for parabolic index fibers.

Leaky-mode resonant reflectors with extreme bandwidths

Optics Letters, 2010
We present ultrawide flat-band reflectors enabled with multilevel resonant leaky-mode structures. The reflectors are designed using particle swarm optimization. We show that three-level silicon-on-insulator structures provide bandwidths of approximately 840 nm for TE polarization and approximately 835 nm for TM polarization, across which reflectance is

Orthogonality Conditions for Leaky Modes

Radiophysics and Quantum Electronics, 2005
We consider various approaches for normalization of leaky modes of open waveguides. General properties of such modes and their relation to continuous-spectrum modes are studied. Applicability of perturbation theory for calculating the shift of mode propagation constants in the case of small variations in the waveguide structure is discussed.

Leaky modes of nonlinear waveguides

2009 International Seminar/Workshop on Direct and Inverse Problems of Electromagnetic and Acoustic Wave Theory, 2009
The leaky modes of planar waveguides with layered walls, consisting of nonlinear materials, are studied. The behaviour of the propagation coefficients are analyzed by the analytical and numerical techniques. The nonlinearity of the media is shown to change the modal dispersion characteristics.

Leaky modes in optical waveguides

Optical and Quantum Electronics, 1985
Solutions of the scalar wave equation are presented giving, explicitly, the excitation and subsequent attenuation of leaky modes in optical waveguides.

On leaky modes on a buoyancy interface

Dynamics of Atmospheres and Oceans, 1979
Abstract When the fluid below a buoyancy interface such as the seasonal thermocline in the ocean is stably stratified as it is often, energy radiation by internal waves into regions deep below is possible. In this paper, the dispersion relation for a sharp thermocline separating a well-mixed layer from a weakly but stably stratified fluid below is ...
