Resistance Training or Whey Protein as an Intervention to Preserve Lean Mass in Men Observing Ramadan

open access: yesPhysiologia
Background: Individuals observe Ramadan fasting for ~11 h per day for 28–30 days, which can negatively affect lean mass. Resistance training or increased protein intake can potentially preserve lean mass in these individuals.

Production of antibacterial compounds by a Steely hybrid polyketide synthase in Dictyostelium

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
By selecting appropriate production species under optimised culture conditions, new chlorinated dibenzofuran compounds, which previously could not be analysed in sufficient quantities, were identified from cellular slime mould fruiting bodies. The strong antibacterial activity exhibited by these compounds suggests a link to the ecological function of ...

HSP70 governs permeability and mechanotransduction in primary human endothelial cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
HSP70 chemical inhibition reduces endothelial cell proliferation and increases permeability, the latter supported by normal interendothelial junctional protein distribution. HSP70 also plays a role in shear stress response, a hemodynamic force naturally present in blood vessels and correlated with vessel protection.

ATG4B is required for mTORC1‐mediated anabolic activity and is associated with clinical outcomes in non‐small cell lung cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The relationship between anabolic and catabolic processes governing lung cancer cell growth is nuanced. We show that ATG4B, an autophagy regulator, is elevated in lung cancer and that high ATG4B is associated with worse patient outcomes. Targeting ATG4B in cells reduces growth, protein synthesis, and mTORC1 activity, demonstrating a new relationship ...

Preservation of lean soft tissue during weight loss induced by GLP-1 and GLP-1/GIP receptor agonists: A case series

open access: yesSAGE Open Medical Case Reports
GLP-1 receptor agonists (e.g., semaglutide) and dual GLP-1/GIP receptor agonists (e.g., tirzepatide) are effective for reducing body weight and fat mass, though lean soft tissue loss comprised 26%–40% of weight loss in recent trials.

Durable B‐Cell Impairment While Sparing IgA B Cells After Ocrelizumab Therapy in Multiple Sclerosis

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives Ocrelizumab (OCR), a humanized anti‐CD20 monoclonal antibody, is highly efficient in relapsing–remitting multiple sclerosis (RR‐MS). We assessed early cellular B‐cell profiles in patients prior to OCR treatment, on OCR treatment, and after 15 months of therapy discontinuation.

Central Dysmyelination in SSADH‐Deficient Humans and Mice

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives Succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase deficiency (SSADHD) is an inherited metabolic disorder characterized by an accumulation of γ‐aminobutyric (GABA). In addition to its synaptic role as an inhibitory neurotransmitter, GABA also plays an important role in myelination.
