ALEX: An Updatable Adaptive Learned Index
© 2020 Association for Computing Machinery. Recent work on "learned indexes" has changed the way we look at the decades-old field of DBMS indexing. The key idea is that indexes can be thought of as "models" that predict the position of a key in a dataset.

The PGM-index: a fully-dynamic compressed learned index with provable worst-case bounds [PDF]
We present the first learned index that supports predecessor, range queries and updates within provably efficient time and space bounds in the worst case. In the (static) context of just predecessor and range queries these bounds turn out to be optimal.

Learning to predict: Neuronal signatures of auditory expectancy in human event-related potentials
Learning to anticipate future states of the world based on statistical regularities in the environment is a key component of perception and is vital for the survival of many organisms.

Gambling on an empty stomach: Hunger modulates preferences for learned but not described risks
Introduction We assess risks differently when they are explicitly described, compared to when we learn directly from experience, suggesting dissociable decision‐making systems. Our needs, such as hunger, could globally affect our risk preferences, but do

The Next Generation Index Structures - Learned Indexes [PDF]

Sewing narratives: engaging in lessons toward an other internationalisation
Answering Cavalcanti’s (2006) call to an Applied Linguistics enacted at its interfaces with other disciplines, in this paper we are inspired by an other globalisation, a concept coined by the geographer Milton Santos.

From LeanStore to LearnedStore: Using a Learned Index to Improve Database Index Search
In the realm of database systems, optimizing B+-tree index performance is of paramount importance to overall database performance. LeanStore, a high-performance OLTP storage engine, has extensively optimized its in-memory B+-tree component as well as its

On Nonlinear Learned String Indexing
We investigate the potential of several artificial neural network architectures to be used as an index on a sorted set of strings, namely, as a mapping from a query string to (an estimate of) its lexicographic rank in the set, which allows solving some ...

Sorting Data via a Look-Up-Table Neural Network and Self-Regulating Index
The so-called learned sorting, which was first proposed by Google, achieves data sorting by predicting the placement positions of unsorted data elements in a sorted sequence based on machine learning models.
