Elicitability of muscle cramps in different leg and foot muscles

Muscle & Nerve, 2009
AbstractTo explore the efficacy of muscle motor point stimulation in eliciting muscle cramps, 11 subjects underwent eight sessions of electrical stimulation of the following muscles bilaterally: abductor hallucis flexor hallucis brevis, and both heads of the gastrocnemius muscles.

Relationships between Leg Muscle Fiber Type Distribution and Leg Exercise Performance

International Journal of Sports Medicine, 1981
The object of the present experiments was to study the impact of muscle fiber type composition on "aerobic" and "anaerobic" performance capacities. Muscle fiber type composition was determined on biopsies from the m. vastus lateralis of 29 healthy males, consisting of sedentary subjects, physical education students, and short- and long-distance runners.

Muscle contractility of leg muscles in patients with mitochondrial myopathies

Mitochondrion, 2019
The primary disease mechanism underlying mitochondrial myopathies (MM) is impaired energy generation to support muscle endurance. Little is known about muscle contractility before energy becomes deficient during muscle contractions. We investigated muscle contractility in MM to uncover potentially fixed weakness aspects of the disorders.Contractility ...

Anomalous muscle in the leg: Soleus accessorium

The American Journal of Sports Medicine, 1984
In the last 4 years we have had the opportunity to investigate an anomalous muscle mass on the medial aspect of the distal leg of three young athletes. A review of the clinical literature has revealed only nine reported cases of a similar muscle mass in this area.

Leg muscle recruitment in highly trained cyclists

Journal of Sports Sciences, 2006
In this study, we examined patterns of leg muscle recruitment and co-activation, and the relationship between muscle recruitment and cadence, in highly trained cyclists. Electromyographic (EMG) activity of the tibialis anterior, tibialis posterior, peroneus longus, gastrocnemius lateralis and soleus was recorded using intramuscular electrodes, at ...

Neuromuscular system of Limulus leg closer muscle

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology, 1968
Abstract 1. 1. The pattern of innervation for the closer muscle of Limulus polyphemus was studied. Six excitor axons were found to innervate the muscle with up to but not more than three excitors to any given fiber. Stimulation of the nerve elicited excitatory junctional potentials in most of the fibers with occasional spike-like responses in ...

Coordination of leg muscles during speed skating

Journal of Biomechanics, 1991
Five speed skaters of elite performance level and six speed skaters of trained level were subjected to an inverse dynamical analysis during speed skating. Push-off forces were registered by means of special skates. Myoelectric activity (EMG) of ten leg muscles and cinematographic data were recorded.

Metabolism in exercising arm vs. leg muscle

Clinical Physiology, 1991
Summary. Arm and leg metabolism were compared by arterial and venous catheterization and blood flow measurements (by dye dilution techniques) in two groups of subjects performing 30‐min continuous arm or leg exercise of increasing intensity corresponding to approximately 30, 50 and 80% of max oxygen uptake for arm or leg exercise.

The Architecture of Leg Muscles

1990
Each of the four muscles shown in Figure 36.1 (a to d) consists of muscle fascicles (bundles of muscle fibers) connected at either end to tendons, but they show striking differences of architecture. Most authors would describe (a) and (c) as pen- nate, but (b) and (d) as parallel-fibered.

Leg Posterior Muscle Compartment Injuries

2017
In this chapter we describe the anatomy of the posterior compartment muscle groups in the calf, including the gastrocnemius, soleus, plantaris, popliteus and others. The anatomy, pathophysiology, clinical signs, and imaging findings of each muscle are explained. Posterior calf pain is a frequently encountered clinical symptom in practice.
