Association between walking gait biomechanical changes after anterior cruciate ligament injury or reconstruction and the development of osteoarthritis: A systematic review

open access: yesKnee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and reconstruction significantly increase the risk of knee osteoarthritis (OA). Biomechanical alterations during walking are frequently suggested contributors to OA development. This systematic review aims to determine the association between walking gait biomechanical changes following ACL ...

Spatiotemporal dynamics of brain function network during proprioception rehabilitation after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: A randomized trial

open access: yesKnee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy, EarlyView.
The improvement of proprioceptive function after ACLR is related to the optimization of spatiotemporal dynamics of SM, CC, DM, CB and VI functional networks. Rehabilitation optimization can incorporate visual–cognitive dual‐task exercises. Abstract Purpose In this study, we aimed to examine the dynamic functional network connectivity (dFNC) patterns ...

Underestimation of tibial tuberosity–trochlear groove distance in conventional knee magnetic resonance imaging compared to full‐extension imaging

open access: yesKnee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose To assess the effect of the knee flexion on the tibial tuberosity–trochlear groove (TT–TG) distance measurement by comparing conventional and whole‐leg rotational magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods This retrospective cohort study included 45 patients with patellar dislocations who had undergone both conventional knee MRI with ...

Muscle performance but not biomechanics associate with second knee injury in a matched cohort of athletes who passed functional return‐to‐sport criteria after ACL reconstruction

open access: yesKnee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose Athletes remain at risk for a second knee injury after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), even after passing return‐to‐sport (RTS) testing. While biomechanical asymmetries have been linked to reinjury, it is unclear whether deficits persist in athletes who meet RTS criteria.

Muscle fibre type populations of human leg muscles

The Histochemical Journal, 1975
Four selected leg muscles (gastrocnemius, soleus, vastus lateralis and intermedius) from thirty-two humans were autopsied within 25 hr of death and examined histochemically. The results of histochemical myofibrillar adenosine triphosphatase activity demonstrated that the soleus and vastus intermedius muscles have a higher proportion of slow twitch ...

Muscle oxygen saturation heterogeneity among leg muscles during ramp exercise.

Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology, 2013
We examined whether O(2) saturation in several leg muscles changes as exercise intensity increases. Twelve healthy young males performed 20 W/min ramp bicycle exercise until exhaustion. Pulmonary O(2) uptake (VO(2)) was monitored continuously during the experiments to determine peak oxygen uptake.

Leg size and muscle functions associated with leg compliance

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1988
Leg compliance is "causally related with greater susceptibility" to orthostatic stress. Since peak O2 uptake (peak VO2) and muscle strength may be related to leg compliance, we examined the relationships between leg compliance and factors related to muscle size and physical fitness.
