Legionnaires’ Disease

open access: yes, 2007
The incidence of legionnaires’ disease (LD) seems to increase with age, particularly in males [36]. It was considered an infrequent cause of pneumonia in the past, but it currently ranks second to pneumococcus in the list of etiologic agents of severe community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) of bacterial origin [2, 24, 60, 89]. Considering less severe cases,

Unraveling the Genetic Predisposition on Respiratory Infections: From Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms to Inborn Errors of Immunity

open access: yesInterdisciplinary Perspectives on Infectious Diseases, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
Background: The complex interplay between the human genome and microbial pathogens has captured scientific interest, leading to profound insights into the genetic basis of host’s susceptibility to infections. Objective: Here, we explore the spectrum of genetic susceptibility in infectious diseases, ranging from common single nucleotide polymorphisms ...

Legionnaires’ Disease: Clinicoradiological Comparison of Sporadic Versus Outbreak Cases

open access: yesClinical Medicine Insights: Circulatory, Respiratory and Pulmonary Medicine, 2017
Background: In 2015, New York City experienced the worst outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in the history of the city. We compare patients seen during the 2015 outbreak with sporadic cases of Legionella during the past 5 years.

Sex differences in CD8+ T cell responses during adaptive immunity

open access: yesWIREs Mechanisms of Disease, Volume 16, Issue 5, September/October 2024.
Figure 1. Current trends of sex differences shaping CD8+ T cell‐mediated immunity. Sex bias affecting T cell immunity have been characterized both at the cellular (genetic and epigenetic modifications) and tissue level (gonadal structures and their sex hormones).

Nosocomial Legionnaires’ Disease: Clinical and Radiographic Patterns

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Infectious Diseases, 1992
From 1981 to 1991, 55 patients (33 males, 22 females, mean age 58.6 years) with nosocomial Legionnaires’ disease were studied. The mortality rate was 64%. One-half of the patients developed nosocomial Legionnaires’ disease within three weeks of admission.

NPCC4: Climate change and New York City's health risk

open access: yesAnnals of the New York Academy of Sciences, Volume 1539, Issue 1, Page 185-240, September 2024.
Abstract This chapter of the New York City Panel on Climate Change 4 (NPCC4) report considers climate health risks, vulnerabilities, and resilience strategies in New York City's unique urban context. It updates evidence since the last health assessment in 2015 as part of NPCC2 and addresses climate health risks and vulnerabilities that have emerged as ...
