Quantifying dwarf satellites through gravitational imaging: the case of SDSS J120602.09+514229.5 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
SDSS J120602.09+514229.5 is a gravitational lens system formed by a group of galaxies at redshift z=0.422 lensing a bright background galaxy at redshift z=2.001.

Investigation of Oxygen‐Free Wetting Behavior of Aluminum on Copper via Molecular Dynamics Simulations and Experiments

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The wettability of aluminum droplets (Al) on different copper substrates (Cu), where liquid Al spreads on solid Cu surfaces to form a liquid–solid interface, is studied numerically and experimentally. The experimental and numerical results show good agreement in the fast‐spreading regime.

Fabrication of Miniaturized Variable-focus Lens Using Liquid Filling Technique [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
This paper describes a simple method for fabricating a variable-focus lens by using PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) and filling with liquid for the variable-focus lens. The lens diameter of 2-mm was designed in this experiment and expected to reach the focal

Interaction of Ladle Slag With Varying SiO2 Content and Recyclate‐Based MgO–C Refractories

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Ladle slags (CaO/Al2O3 = 1) with 1–20 wt% SiO2 were investigated in contact with industrial MgO–C refractories fabricated from fresh magnesia and 50 wt% recyclate. The sessile drop method at 1600°C reveals intensive gas formation, delayed slag infiltration in recyclate‐based samples, and, under high‐SiO2 slag, formation of a dense MgAl2O4‐rich ...

Morphologic features of crystalline lens in cataract patients with different lens sclerosis and axial length

open access: yesBMC Ophthalmology
Introduction To investigate morphological features of crystalline lens in cataract patients and examine the association between lens nucleus sclerosis, axial length (AL), and lens morphology. Methods This retrospective study consecutive included 285 left

Ocular manifestations of homocystinuria due to cystathionine beta-synthase deficiency: A rare case report with genetic analysis

open access: yesTNOA Journal of Ophthalmic Science and Research, 2020
Microspherophakia is a developmental lens anomaly characterized by increased anteroposterior diameter and reduced equatorial diameter, which predisposes to secondary glaucoma. A 12-year-old boy presented with diminution of vision.

Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma Deoxidation of Natively Oxide Layer of Copper Powders in a Fluidized Bed

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This paper presents a novel approach to reducing oxide layers on metal powders using low‐temperature hydrogen dielectric barrier discharge plasmas at atmospheric pressure. Unlike conventional hydrogen‐plasma reductions, the powders do not contact the plasma directly.

Deterministic Detection of Single Ion Implantation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Focused ion beam implantation with high detection efficiencies will enable the rapid and scalable fabrication of advanced spin‐based technologies such as qubits. This work presents the detection efficiencies of a wide range of ions implanted into solid‐state hosts, with efficiencies of >90% recorded for ion species and substrate combinations of ...

Chromatically corrected virtual image visual display [PDF]

open access: yes, 1980
An in-line, three element, large diameter, optical display lens is disclosed which has a front convex-convex element, a central convex-concave element, and a rear convex-convex element. The lens, used in flight simulators, magnifies an image presented on

Can Strong Gravitational Lensing Constrain Dark Energy?

open access: yes, 2007
We discuss the ratio of the angular diameter distances from the source to the lens, $D_{ds}$, and to the observer at present, $D_{s}$, for various dark energy models.
