Beyond compactness

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
Context. Ultra-compact massive galaxies (UCMGs) often exhibit elevated stellar-to-dynamical mass ratios when dynamical masses are estimated using standard virial prescriptions. This discrepancy has been interpreted as evidence for structural non-homology

Star formation histories of dwarf lenticular galaxies

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society
ABSTRACT Star formation histories (SFHs) are essential for understanding galaxy formation and evolution. We present the mean SFHs of 148 dwarf lenticular galaxies (dS0s) derived from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectra. These SFHs reveal two distinct periods of active star formation. The first period, concluding approximately 6 Gyr ago,

The influence of environment in the formation of lenticular galaxies

open access: yes, 2021
Lenticular galaxies (S0s) are believed to form through 2 main pathways: mergers or fading of a spiral progenitor. It is not clear yet what is the dominant scenario, nor what are the parameters and physical conditions that favor one path instead of the other. In a pilot study with 21 galaxies (Coccato et al.

The SLUGGS survey: chromodynamical modelling of the lenticular galaxy NGC 1023 [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2015
Globular clusters (GCs) can be considered discrete, long-lived, dynamical tracers that retain crucial information about the assembly history of their parent galaxy. In this paper, we present a new catalogue of GC velocities and colours for the lenticular galaxy NGC 1023, we study their kinematics and spatial distribution, in comparison with the ...

The Origin of Star-forming Rings in S0 Galaxies

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
Spatially resolved integral field spectroscopic maps in a sample of 532 S0 galaxies from the MaNGA survey have unveiled the existence of inner rings (〈 R 〉 ∼ 1 R _e ) betraying ongoing star formation in a number of these objects.

Age and metallicity of the bulges in lenticular galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2007
AbstractPanoramic spectroscopy of the sample of 80 nearby lenticular galaxies is presented. The SSP-equivalent ages, [Z/H], and [Mg/Fe] are determined through the Lick indices Hβ, Mgb, and 〈Fe〉 separately for the nuclei and for the bulges. About a half of the sample contain chemically distinct nuclei, more metal-rich and younger than the bulges.

PGC 44685: A Dwarf Star-forming Lenticular Galaxy with a Wolf–Rayet Population

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Lenticular galaxies (S0s) are formed mainly from the gas stripping of spirals in the cluster. But how S0s form and evolve in the field is still in need of being resolved.

Distribution and Motions of Atomic Hydrogen in Lenticular Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1983
We report the results of HI observations of eleven gas-rich SO/SOa galaxies with the Westerbork Synthesis Telescope. The majority of these galaxies have most of their hydrogen outside the optical body, in annular configurations with diameters ~2 times the optical. These outer gas rings are often clumped, incomplete, and in approximately circular motion.

Globular clusters and planetary nebulae kinematics and X-ray emission in the early-type galaxy NGC 5128 [PDF]

open access: yesSerbian Astronomical Journal, 2006
The estimates of the mass of the galaxy NGC 5128 based on the different mass tracers, globular clusters (GCs) and planetary nebulae (PNe), are presented.

Abundant Molecular Gas in the Central Region of Lenticular Galaxy PGC 39535

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Lenticular galaxies (S0s) in the local Universe are generally absent of recent star formation and lack molecular gas. In this paper, we investigate one massive ( M _* ∼ 5 × 10 ^10 M _⊙ ) star-forming S0, PGC 39535, with the Northern Extended Millimeter ...
