The HAM10000 dataset, a large collection of multi-source dermatoscopic images of common pigmented skin lesions

open access: yes, 2018
Training of neural networks for automated diagnosis of pigmented skin lesions is hampered by the small size and lack of diversity of available datasets of dermatoscopic images. We tackle this problem by releasing the HAM10000 ("Human Against Machine with

Microinvasive lentigo maligna melanoma

open access: yesJournal of the American Academy of Dermatology, 1987
Ninety-one skin biopsy specimens previously identified as lentigo maligna were examined for the presence of microinvasion, using the demonstration of S100 protein within atypical cells as the means for locating these superficial foci. In 14 cases, atypical melanocytes were identified, most often in the papillary dermis.

AI‐derived prognostic biomarkers from melanoma whole slide image segmentation: an initial discovery and assessment

open access: yesThe Journal of Pathology: Clinical Research, Volume 12, Issue 2, March 2026.
Abstract The current melanoma staging system predicts 74% of the variance in survival, with prognostic biomarkers subject to high levels of inter‐observer variation. This work assesses whether a previously developed convolutional neural network (CNN) for invasive melanoma segmentation in whole slide images (WSIs) may reveal new insights into melanoma ...

Dermatoscopic features of cutaneous non-facial and non-acral lentiginous growth pattern melanomas

open access: yesDermatology Practical & Conceptual, 2014
Background: The dermatoscopic features of facial lentigo maligna (LM), facial lentigo maligna melanoma (LMM) and acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM) have been well described. This is the first description of the dermatoscopic appearance of a clinical series

In vivo multimodal optical imaging of dermoscopic equivocal melanocytic skin lesions

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
There is a wide range of equivocal melanocytic lesions that can be clinically and dermoscopically indistinguishable from early melanoma. In the present work, we assessed the possibilities of combined using of multiphoton microscopy (MPM) and optical ...

Hypothyroidism as Prognostic Factor in Cutaneous Melanoma: A 1553‐Patient Single‐Center Study

open access: yesCancer Medicine, Volume 15, Issue 3, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Cutaneous melanoma is a rising global health concern and identifying modifiable or associated risk factors remains essential for improving prognostic stratification. Hypothyroidism, affecting approximately 5.1% of the general population in Germany, has been associated with various malignancies. This study investigates the prevalence

SOX10 commonly stains scar in Mohs sections [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Sox10 immunostaining is used for the diagnosis and margin evaluation of melanocytic lesions. Sox10 was initially thought not to stain fibrohistiocytic processes.

Defensive medicine in dermatological practice – Dermatopathology as a mirror of structural challenges

open access: yesJDDG: Journal der Deutschen Dermatologischen Gesellschaft, Volume 24, Issue 3, Page 302-315, March 2026.
Summary Defensive medicine refers to diagnostic or therapeutic actions taken primarily to reduce legal liability rather than to benefit the patient. In dermatopathology, defensive practices manifest in frequent immunohistochemical testing, overly cautious report phrasing, and reliance on multidisciplinary tumor boards.

Scalp Melanoma in a Young Patient With Systemic Sarcoidosis: Multidisciplinary Approach

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, Volume 14, Issue 2, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Often discovered at late stages, scalp melanoma presents unique diagnostic difficulties. Timely detection via public awareness, education, and comprehensive clinical assessment is essential for survival rate improvement. This case report shows the significance of multidisciplinary care and targeted therapies which can achieve remission even in
