AbstractBACKGROUND:Leptomeningeal carcinomatosis (LC) represents a devastating complication of systemic cancer, and patients with LC have a dismal prognosis and increased mortality. The few studies that have focused on the evaluation of prognostic factors in patients with LC have resulted in contradictory results.

Leptomeningeal carcinomatosis: review of the literature.
Metastases from solid tumors that seed the leptomeninges (meningeal carcinomatosis) are an important neurologic complication of systemic cancer. Recently many authors have reported that its incidence is increasing; particularly it has been demonstrated for breast cancer and small cell bronchogenic carcinoma.

Leptomeningeal Carcinomatosis in Gastric Cancer: A Therapeutical Challenge
Leptomeningeal carcinomatosis (LC) is a rare and mainly secondary site of metastasis in solid tumors. In gastric cancer (GC), it is associated with a devastating prognosis, lacking an efficient and standardized treatment approach.

Leptomeningeal Carcinomatosis in Gastric Cancer
Journal of Neuro-Oncology, 2004We analyzed 19 cases of cytologically confirmed leptomeningeal carcinomatosis (LMC) treated at our institution over the past 11 years. LMC was the initial manifestation of gastric cancer in 2 patients. With the exception of 1 patient, the primary gastric cancer was Borrmann type III or IV, and 88% had poorly differentiated or signet-ring cell histology.

To determine factors that are predictive of survival among patients with leptomeningeal carcinomatosis.Studies of potential prognostic factors in leptomeningeal carcinomatosis have produced conflicting results. Reasons for the discrepancies may be methodological differences in case ascertainment, treatment protocols, and limitations due to the size of ...

Cerebellar leptomeningeal carcinomatosis in a dog
Journal of Small Animal Practice, 2007Diffuse cerebellar meningeal carcinomatosis secondary to haematogenous dissemination from an anaplastic solid mammary carcinoma was diagnosed in an old German shepherd dog suffering from seizures and rapidly progressing to stupor. A single computed tomography cerebellar scan identified an unusual homogeneous density area that was considered to be ...

Hypoglycorrhachia in leptomeningeal carcinomatosis A pathophysiological study
The Italian Journal of Neurological Sciences, 1988We describe a patient with leptomeningeal carcinomatosis in whom no primary malignancy was found in spite of extensive laboratory investigations. The diagnosis was supported, however, by cytological and biochemical CSF examination. Of particular interest in this setting was the low level of glycorrhachia.

Leptomeningeal carcinomatosis from ovarian cancer
Medical Oncology, 2011Ovarian cancer is the most common cause of mortality among women with gynecologic malignancies and the fifth leading cause of death in all women. It usually spreads locally; hematogenous dissemination is rare, most often involving the liver and lungs.

Extensive cortical involvement in leptomeningeal carcinomatosis
Journal of Clinical Neuroscience, 2012We present a 77-year-old previously well patient with facial asymmetry and progressive weakness of the lower extremities. An initial MRI revealed slight contrast enhancement of the meninges. Three consecutive cerebrospinal fluid examinations demonstrated low glucose concentration, marked elevation of total protein and moderate pleocytosis.

Newer Avenues for the Treatment of Leptomeningeal Carcinomatosis
Central Nervous System Agents in Medicinal Chemistry, 2011Leptomeningeal Carcinomatosis (LC) refers to diffuse seeding of the leptomeninges by tumor metastases and is a rare presentation of solid tumors, particularly breast cancer, lung cancer and malignant melanoma in adults and hematogenous malignancies and primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) in children.
