Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Ailing Voters Advance Attractive Congressional Candidates

open access: yesEvolutionary Psychology, 2015
Among many benefits of facial attractiveness, there is evidence that more attractive politicians are more likely to be elected. Recent research found this effect to be most pronounced in congressional districts with high disease threat—a result ...

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

Epigenetic blind spots – the role of DNA methylation dynamics in stem cell‐based models of embryogenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Embryo‐like structures (stembryos) are an innovative tool, but they are hindered by experimental variability and limited developmental potential. DNA methylation is crucial for mammalian development, but its status in stembryo models is poorly characterized.

The human gut microbiome across the life course

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Despite significant individual variation and continuous change throughout life, the human gut microbiome follows some life stage‐specific trends. This article provides a brief overview of how gut microbiome composition shifts across different phases of life. Created in BioRender. Özkurt, E. (2026) https://BioRender.com/8q4nrnc.

Homo Heuristicus: Less-is-More Effects in Adaptive Cognition.

open access: yesThe Malaysian journal of medical sciences : MJMS, 2013
Heuristics are efficient cognitive processes that ignore information. In contrast to the widely held view that less processing reduces accuracy, the study of heuristics shows that less information, computation, and time can in fact improve accuracy. We discuss some of the major progress made so far, focusing on the discovery of less-is-more effects and

From group diffusion to ratio bias [PDF]

open access: yesJudgment and Decision Making, 2009
The group-diffusion effect is the tendency for people to judge themselves to be less likely to experience a negative outcome as the total number of people exposed to the threat increases --- even when the probability of the outcome is explicitly ...
