Toxicity of Imidacloprid Against Melipona scutellaris (Latreille, 1811): Preliminary Risk Analysis

open access: yesSociobiology
The study aimed to evaluate the oral toxicity of the pesticide Imidacloprid Nortox 400 SC® on native bees (Melipona scutellaris) and assess the potential risk associated with visiting crops treated with this product.

Developmental toxicity of bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (epoxide resin badge) during the early life cycle of a native amphibian species [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (BADGE) is used in packaging materials, in epoxy adhesives, and as an additive for plastics, but it is also a potential industrial wastewater contaminant.

Lethal and Sublethal Concentrations of Formulated Larvicides Against Susceptible Aedes aegypti

open access: yesJournal of the American Mosquito Control Association, 2022
ABSTRACT Chemical control of vectors depends on the effective application of formulated insecticides. In this study we evaluated formulated larvicides using a larval bioassay against susceptible Aedes aegypti. The estimated larvicide lethal concentrations for 50% mortality (LC50s) were 25.7 μg/liter (Natular 2EC), 3.13 μg/liter (Abate 4E), 0.43

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Guinea pigs sublethally infected with aerosolized Legionella pneumophila develop humoral and cell-mediated immune responses and are protected against lethal aerosol challenge. A model for studying host defense against lung infections caused by intracellular pathogens. [PDF]

open access: yes, 1987
We have employed the guinea pig model of L. pneumophila infection, which mimics Legionnaires' disease in humans both clinically and pathologically, to study humoral and cell-mediated immune responses to L.

Aggressive prostate cancer is associated with pericyte dysfunction

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Tumor‐produced TGF‐β drives pericyte dysfunction in prostate cancer. This dysfunction is characterized by downregulation of some canonical pericyte markers (i.e., DES, CSPG4, and ACTA2) while maintaining the expression of others (i.e., PDGFRB, NOTCH3, and RGS5).

Biological Control of Diamondback Moth—Increased Efficacy with Mixtures of Beauveria Fungi

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2022
Diamondback moth (DBM) is an important horticultural pest worldwide as the larvae of these moths feed on the leaves of cruciferous vegetables. As DBM has developed resistance to more than 100 classes of synthetic insecticides, new biological control ...

The neural crest‐associated gene ERRFI1 is involved in melanoma progression and resistance toward targeted therapy

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
ERRFI1, a neural crest (NC)‐associated gene, was upregulated in melanoma and negatively correlated with the expression of melanocytic differentiation markers and the susceptibility of melanoma cells toward BRAF inhibitors (BRAFi). Knocking down ERRFI1 significantly increased the sensitivity of melanoma cells to BRAFi.

Stabilization of residual mercury from gold mining as metacinnabar and cinnabar in ball mills on a pilot scale

open access: yesHeliyon
Waste liquid mercury generated as a by-product of the Merrill–Crowe process in gold mining and recovered from mercury-containing waste must be stabilized for secure storage or disposal. This study developed a procedure for mercury stabilization.

Peroxidasin enables melanoma immune escape by inhibiting natural killer cell cytotoxicity

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Peroxidasin (PXDN) is secreted by melanoma cells and binds the NK cell receptor NKG2D, thereby suppressing NK cell activation and cytotoxicity. PXDN depletion restores NKG2D signaling and enables effective NK cell–mediated melanoma killing. These findings identify PXDN as a previously unrecognized immune evasion factor and a potential target to improve
