In research into the cause of the disease nutrient deficiencies, fungi, bacteria, nematodes and, more recently, viruses have been investigated without implicating any causal agent. Large scale management of coconut lethal yellowing disease in Mozambique : P14.006

Mozambique was, at the beginning of the 1900's, one of the biggest world copra producers. Since the 1990s the coconut crop became seriously threatened by Coconut Lethal Yellowing Disease (CLYD), an insect transmitted disease caused by phytoplasma, which killed, up to 2008, at least 7,000,000 coconut palms.

The Côte d’Ivoire lethal yellowing (CILY) phytoplasma continues rapidly spreading into new coconut-growing villages, severely affecting the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in Grand-Lahou. Eight villages were surveyed for the CILY phytoplasma presence.
