Genomic Signatures of Domestication in a Fungus Obligately Farmed by Leafcutter Ants. [PDF]
The naturally selected fungal crop (Leucoagaricus gongylophorus) farmed by leafcutter ants shows striking parallels with artificially selected plant crops domesticated by humans (e.g.

Chemical analysis and hydroalcoholic extract activity of ferns on the mutualist fungus of leafcutter ants [PDF]
Leafcutter ants are among the most important agricultural and forest pests in the Neotropical region, given that they use plant matter as substrate for the growth of their mutualist fungus Leucoagaricus gongylophorus.

Xanthyletin is used as an inhibitor of the symbiotic fungus (Leucoagaricus gongylophorus) of the leaf-cutting ant (Atta sexdens rubropilosa), one of the most significant agricultural plague insects.

Chlorophyllum rhacodes, an open forest 'mushroom' species, is occasionally found fruiting on nests of Formica lugubris. Within less mobile thatch of such nests, there was a spatial relationship between C. rhacodes mycelium, insect cadavers, fruitbody initiation, and roots of adjacent trees.

Understanding the Hygienic Behavioral Dynamics of Ants Using Multi‐State Models
Leaf‐cutting ants adjust grooming to pathogen risk and vulnerable nestmates. Multi‐state Markov models reveal shorter, frequent self‐grooming bouts and reduced allogrooming persistence under stress, optimizing social immunity via stigmergic decision‐making.

Fungus‐farming ants cultivate fungus gardens for food. ‘Higher’ fungus‐farming ants, including the well‐known leaf‐cutting ants, cultivate domesticated cultivars that are clearly modified for life with ants. Here we show that the higher fungus‐farming ant genus Trachymyrmex consists of three different groups, one of which is the sister group of leaf ...

Potential of alternative control of leaf‐cutting ants using essential oils: A systematic review
Abstract Leaf‐cutting ants (LCAs) are abundant and cause considerable damage to agricultural and forest crops in the Neotropical region and are commonly controlled using sulfluramid‐based ant baits. However, this active ingredient is a precursor of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), a persistent, human‐made pollutant that poses serious environmental

Abstract Ants in the Neotropical genus Sericomyrmex Mayr cultivate fungi for food. Both ants and fungi are obligate, coevolved symbionts. The taxonomy of Sericomyrmex is problematic because the morphology of the worker caste is generally homogeneous across all of the species within the genus, species limits are vague, and the relationships between them

Many social insect species build nests, which strongly differ from the surrounding environment and are often occupied by specific organismal communities. We compared the Mucoromycota (Fungi) community of red wood ant's (Formica polyctena) mounds with the community of the surrounding forest litter. We show that the fungal community of mounds is specific
