Leukoaraiosis in Stroke Patients
Stroke, 1995Background and Purpose This study was undertaken to determine factors of importance for the development of leukoaraiosis and to evaluate whether leukoaraiosis influences stroke outcome. Methods The study was prospective and consecutive and included 1084 unselected patients with ...

Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of the brains of elderly individuals frequently show areas of altered signal intensity in the periventricular and subcortical white matter, referred to as leukoaraiosis. Although mildly affected individuals appear asymptomatic, larger burdens of leukoaraiosis are associated with deficits of cognition ...

Current Treatment Options in Cardiovascular Medicine, 2005
Altered signal intensity in the subcortical white matter on magnetic resonance imaging of the brain, referred to as leukoaraiosis, is frequently observed on imaging studies in elderly persons and was previously considered a benign accompaniment of aging. However, recent studies have found a clear association between the presence of leukoaraiosis and an

LEUKOARAIOSIS IN STROKE PATIENTS
International Journal of Neuroscience, 2003Pathogenesis of leukoaraiosis (LA) is not clearly understood and its significance in patients with stroke remains undetermined. In the Neurology Department of Ankara Hospital, computed tomography (CT) examination of brain was performed for various reasons in 288 patients. LA was detected in 178 patients by the use of brain CT.

Journal of Neuropathology and Experimental Neurology, 1999
We report a case of leukoaraiosis that was studied for apoptosis. In the neuropil, the number of cells that showed DNA fragmentation was 2.5 times as great in the area of leukoaraiosis as in the adjacent white matter (P = .004) and 25 times as great as in the nearby cortex (P < .001).

Practical Neurology, 2008
Leukoaraiosis describes diffuse white matter abnormalities on CT or MR brain scans, often seen in the normal elderly and in association with vascular risk factors such as hypertension, or in the context of cognitive impairment. The term was introduced to avoid confusing an imaging appearance with a specific pathology.
