Leukocyte telomerase activity and antidepressant efficacy in bipolar disorder
European Neuropsychopharmacology, 2014Telomeres are DNA-protein complexes that cap linear DNA strands, protecting DNA from damage. Recently, shorten telomeres length has been reported in bipolar disorder (BD) and depression. The enzyme telomerase regulates telomeres׳ length, which has been associated with cellular viability; however it is not clear how telomerase may be involved in the ...

Physiological Roles of Leukocytes and Disorders
2018This chapter describes white blood cells of the peripheral blood: neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, monocytes, and lymphocyte subsets. It describes their basic physiology and important disease states associated with defects of each of these entities. Each of these cells arises from a common bone marrow myeloid or lymphoid progenitor to differentiate

Cyclic-AMP production by polymorphonuclear leukocytes in psychiatric disorders
Biological Psychiatry, 1989The cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) responses to histamine, prostaglandin-E1, and isoproterenol in polymorphonuclear leukocytes from drug-free normal controls and patients with schizophrenia or major depressive disorder were compared. These three groups of subjects did not differ in their cAMP responses to receptor activation.

Human Leukocyte Antigen Type and Posttransplant Lymphoproliferative Disorder
Transplantation, 2015Posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) is an infrequent but serious complication of solid organ transplantation. Early detection and initiation of therapy may improve outcomes. The purpose of this study was to identify human leukocyte antigen (HLA) type as risk and prognostic factors for PTLD.A review was undertaken to identify PTLD cases ...

Leukocyte mitochondrial DNA copy number in bipolar disorder
Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology and Biological Psychiatry, 2014Evidence supports the role for mitochondrial impairment in the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder (BD). BD has been associated with decreased mitochondrial electron transport chain activity and increased oxidative stress. Also, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) encodes mitochondrial electron transport chain proteins and has been associated with altered ...

Altered arachidonate metabolism by leukocytes and platelets in myeloproliferative disorders
Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Medicine, 1983The arachidonate metabolism by leukocytes and platelets was studied in 14 patients with myeloproliferative disorders including 7 patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), 5 with polycythemia vera (PV) and 2 with essential thrombocythemia (ET).

WHIM syndrome: a genetic disorder of leukocyte trafficking
Current Opinion in Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 2003WHIM syndrome (the association of warts, hypogammaglobulinemia, recurrent bacterial infections, and 'myelokathexis') is a rare congenital form of neutropenia associated with an unusual immune disorder involving hypogammaglonulinemia and abnormal susceptibility to warts.

Leukocyte telomere length is reduced in patients with major depressive disorder
Drug Development Research, 2019AbstractMajor depressive disorder (MDD) is a chronic, severe psychiatric illness with an incidence of 3% worldwide. MDD patients have a significantly impaired quality of life and reduced life expectancy compared to unaffected individuals, the latter being largely accounted for by an increased incidence of suicide and cardiovascular disorders.

Telomere shortening in blood leukocytes of patients with posttraumatic stress disorder
Journal of Psychiatric Research, 2019Telomeres are protective fragments on chromosome ends involved in maintaining genome stability, preventing chromosomal fusions, regulation of cell division. It was shown that telomere attrition rate is accelerated in age-related diseases, as well as in response to physiological and psychosocial stress.

Radial segmentation of leukocyte nuclei in some rheumatic disorders
Rheumatology International, 1994Heat-induced radial segmentation of leukocyte nuclei is a phenomenon reported to occur in various inflammatory diseases. In order to explore its potential diagnostic value, we studied the occurrence of this phenomenon in 32 subjects with rheumatic inflammatory diseases, 14 subjects with noninflammatory disease, and 15 healthy individuals.
