Correlation of leukocyte esterase activity and bacterial isolation from body fluids [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Microbiology, 1984
We evaluated 230 body fluid samples, of which 131 were peritoneal effluents and 99 were other body fluids. Of these, 63 dialysates were culture positive, and 54 (85.7%) of these 63 were leukocyte esterase positive. Of 99 other body fluids, 8 were both culture positive and leukocyte esterase positive.

How does study quality affect the results of a diagnostic meta-analysis? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Background: The use of systematic literature review to inform evidence based practice in diagnostics is rapidly expanding. Although the primary diagnostic literature is extensive, studies are often of low methodological quality or poorly reported.

Acute collapse in a dog with multiple autoimmune syndromes and polymyositis complicated by suspected organophosphate/carbamate toxicity

open access: yesVeterinary Record Case Reports, Volume 14, Issue 1, February 2026.
Abstract A 6.5‐year‐old, spayed, female dog presented in acute respiratory distress. On admission, the dog exhibited dyspnoea, bradycardia, cyanosis and gastrointestinal signs, requiring immediate intubation and mechanical ventilation. Diagnostic evaluation revealed reduced butyrylcholinesterase activity, non‐cardiogenic pulmonary oedema, elevated ...

Further Studies on Elastase-Like Esterases in Human Leukocyte Granules

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 1971
Summary1. Human peripheral blood leukocyte granules contain a neutral esterase which hydrolyzes t-BOC-l-alanine p-nitrophenol, a synthetic substrate of elastase. The alanine p-nitrophenyl esterase was identified following isoelectric focusing of granule proteins in acrylamide gel and sucrose density-gradient systems.

ICSH Recommendations for Monocyte Cell Lineage Morphologic Identification, Nomenclature Harmonization, and Utilization as a Biomarker

open access: yesInternational Journal of Laboratory Hematology, Volume 48, Issue 1, Page 12-25, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Monocytes are key components of the Mononuclear Phagocyte System, crucial in immune defense, inflammation, and tissue repair. Accurate identification and classification of monocyte lineage cells are essential for diagnosing both reactive and clonal hematologic disorders.

Inhibition of the Elastase-Like Esterase in Human Leukocyte Granules by Human Leukocyte Cell Sap

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 1971
SummaryHuman leukocyte cytosol inhibits esterolysis of a synthetic elastase substrate by human leukocyte granule extract. Hydrolysis of the same substrate by pancreatic elastase is not affected, nor is esterolysis of BAPA by trypsin or GPANA by chymotrypsin.

Globule leukocytes and mast cells in the rat trachea: their number, distribution, and response to compound 48/80 and dexamethasone. [PDF]

open access: yes, 1988
Globule leukocytes in the epithelium of the rat trachea may be counterparts of mucosal mast cells that are located in the gastrointestinal tract. If they are indeed similar to mucosal mast cells, globule leukocytes would be expected to decrease in number

Synthetic Hydrogels Incorporating Hydrolytic/Nonhydrolytic Macromer Ratios Exhibit Improved Tunability of In Vivo Degradation and Immune Responses

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, Volume 15, Issue 3, 19 January 2026.
A synthetic 4‐arm maleimide‐terminated poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG‐4MAL) hydrogel system that combines hydrolytic ester‐linked macromer (PEG‐4eMAL) with nondegradable amide‐linked macromer (PEG‐4aMAL) in various stoichiometric ratios to tune the degradability rate. The macromers are crosslinked with dithiothreitol via thiol‐maleimide click reaction. The

Injectable BMSC‐Based Extracellular Matrix‐Mimicking Microtissue for Myocardial Infarction Repair

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 3, 14 January 2026.
A novel injectable biomimetic extracellular matrix scaffold (JLSV) is designed for enhanced delivery of bone marrow‐derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). By utilizing janus basic nanotubes, laminin, stromal‐derived factor‐1 alpha, and vascular endothelial growth factor, this innovative JLSV–BMSC microtissue shows promise in myocardial infarction ...

Urinary tract infections in the community [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are defined as significant bacteriuria in the setting of symptoms of cystitis/pyelonephritis. Urine dipstick is diagnostic in most cases.
