Interference by Phenazopyridine With the Leukocyte Esterase Dipstick

JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1986
To the Editor.— The leukocyte esterase dipstick (Chemstrip 9) has been shown to be a sensitive screening test for pyuria and hematuria in symptomatic1and asymptomatic2patients. In an attempt to develop a cost-effective approach to this problem in a university health service, all female patients complaining of dysuria were screened with the dipstick ...

Cytochemical Demonstration of Esterases in Peripheral Blood Leukocytes

American Journal of Veterinary Research, 1978
SUMMARY Cytochemical methods for alpha naphthyl acetate esterase and chloroacetate esterase have been used to identify human monocytes and granulocytes. In this study, a standard procedure for staining alpha naphthyl acetate and chloroacetate esterase activities was modified by extending the range of pH of the incubation mixture and the duration of ...

Amniotic Fluid Leukocytes and Leukocyte Esterase Activity in Parturients Delivered by Caesarean Section

Scandinavian Journal of Infectious Diseases, 1997
Amniotic fluid specimens from parturients undergoing caesarean delivery were examined for leukocytes and leukocyte esterase activity, as well as for amniotic fluid bacteria and mycoplasmas by cultivation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the intrauterine environment in noninfected parturients and the associations between leukocyte test results ...

A simple spectrophotometric assay for urinary leukocyte esterase activity

Biochemical Medicine and Metabolic Biology, 1988
We have developed a sensitive spectrophotometric method for assaying urinary leukocyte esterase activity by employing a synthetic substrate, N-toluene sulfonyl indoxyl alanine ester. This kinetic assay can be performed with a small aliquot of urine, by following the change in absorbance of the chromophore at 385 nm.

Rapid detection of pyuria by leukocyte esterase activity.

JAMA, 1981
To evaluate whether leukocyte esterase activity is a useful biochemical marker of pyuria, we examined urine from 20 healthy volunteers, 47 patients with renal disease, and 399 specimens from 72 hospitalized patients with catheters. Microscopic quantification of leukocytes (centrifuged sediment and volumetric chamber count) was compared with esterase ...

Clinical Uses of the Leukocyte Esterase Test

Primary Care: Clinics in Office Practice, 1986
In summary, there are many current and potential uses of the leukocyte esterase dipstick. However, the studies in the literature supporting these uses have several methodologic problems that should make one cautious about relying on the test too heavily.

Evidence that Human Leukocyte Inhibitory Factor (LIF) Is an Esterase

The Journal of Immunology, 1977
Abstract There are known to be two distinct lymphocyte mediators which inhibit cell migration in vitro, migration inhibitory factor (MIF), which inhibits macrophage migration, and leukocyte inhibitory factor (LIF), which influences the migration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNL).

The Utility of Leukocyte Esterase Strip Test in the Diagnosis of Pediatric Septic Arthritis

Journal of pediatric orthopedics, 2019
Background: Most tests used to diagnose pediatric septic arthritis are either not accurate or do not produce rapid results. A leukocyte esterase (LE) strip test has previously been validated for the diagnosis of adult native and periprosthetic joint ...

Leukocyte Esterase Activity in Amniotic Fluid: Normal Values During Pregnancy

American Journal of Perinatology, 1990
Chorioamnionitis during pregnancy is a common diagnostic dilemma for the obstetrician. Fast and accurate diagnosis poses the most significant problem. Since leukocytes are known to be released in response to infections, examination of amniotic fluid for their presence is an important part of the evaluation for chorioamnionitis.

Leukocyte Esterase: Metal-on-Metal Failure and Periprosthetic Joint Infection

The Journal of Arthroplasty, 2016
Adverse local tissue reactions (ALTRs) and periprosthetic joint infection can occur after metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty (THA), both potentially generating purulent synovial fluid (SF) and elevated white cell count. This makes it difficult to distinguish between diagnoses; therefore, we evaluated leukocyte esterase (LE) strip test's reliability ...
