It is well known that pulmonary influx of neutrophils is involved in lung injury in patients with adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Neutrophils are major contributors to the self-defence mechanism, however, adverse effects of neutrophils have also been recognized. Recently, we found that a highly toxic substance, 9, 10-epoxy-12-octadecenoate (

LEUKOTOXIN PRODUCTION BY ACTINOBACILLUS ACTINOMYCETEMCOMITANS
Toxin Reviews, 2006Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans is a gram-negative pathogen that causes human severe periodontitis. The most intensively studied virulence factor of this bacterium is a pore-forming cytotoxin termed leukotoxin. Production of leukotoxin varies considerably among A. actinomycetemcomitans strains.

Binding of Pasteurella haemolytica leukotoxin to bovine leukocytes
Infection and Immunity, 1997Pasteurella haemolytica is the principal bacterial pathogen in the bovine respiratory disease complex. This organism produces an exotoxin (referred to as leukotoxin) during logarithmic-phase growth that is a potent leukocyte-modulating agent. At low concentrations, it activates neutrophils and mononuclear phagocytes to release inflammatory mediators ...

Mannheimia haemolytica leukotoxin
2010Mannheimia haemolytica is the primary bacterial pathogen of bovine pneumonic pasteurellosis, an economically important disease of cattle worldwide. Leukotoxin (Lkt) produced by M. haemolytica is the major virulence factor of this organism. The cytolytic activity of Lkt is specific for ruminant leukocytes.

Biological and biochemical characterization of Fusobacterium necrophorum leukotoxin
American Journal of Veterinary Research, 1994Summary Biological and biochemical characteristics of the leukotoxin of Fusobacterium necrophorum were determined. Culture supernatant of F necrophorum was toxic to polymorphonuclear neutrophilic, leukocytes from cattle and sheep, but not to those from pigs and rabbits.

Lysis of bovine platelets by Pasteurella haemolytica leukotoxin
American Journal of Veterinary Research, 1991SUMMARY Pasteurella haemolytica Al culture supernatants caused rapid cytolysis (<5 minutes) of isolated bovine platelets as measured by leakage of the cytoplasmic enzyme lactate dehydrogenase ( ld ).

Factors affecting the leukotoxin activity of Fusobacterium necrophorum
Veterinary Microbiology, 1992The effect of cultural conditions on the production of leukotoxin by biotypes A and B of F. necrophorum was investigated. Biotypes A and B were grown in prereduced, anaerobically sterilized, brain-heart infusion (BHI) broth. The average leukotoxin titer of culture supernatant was 18 times higher from biotype A strains than from biotype B strains ...

Molecular Genetics and the Analysis of Leukotoxin in A. actinomycetemcomitans
Journal of Periodontology, 1996The primary pathogen involved in certain forms of early‐onset periodontitis is A. actinomycetemcomitans. Among its numerous potential virulence factors is a leukotoxin that kills certain host defense cells. In order to analyze the regulation and in vivo function of leukotoxin and other virulence factors in A.
