Minimax optimal level set estimation

SPIE Proceedings, 2005
This paper describes a new methodology and associated theoretical analysis for rapid and accurate extraction of level sets of a multivariate function from noisy data. The identification of the boundaries of such sets is an important theoretical problem with applications for digital elevation maps, medical imaging, and pattern recognition.

LEVEL FUZZY SETS

Journal of Cybernetics, 1977
Abstract In practical applications of fuzzy set theory, e.g., in pattern recognition, information retrieval, etc., the reader is not advised-for the reasons of the amount of the considered object universal set and the capacity of computer memory involved-to consider fuzzy sets defined in the whole universal set, when it is sufficient-from the point of ...

Setting euthanasia on the level

The Liverpool Law Review, 1993
The House of Lords recently set up a Select Committee on Medical Ethics to consider euthanasia and related medical decisions at the end of life. This followed widespread publicity surrounding recent cases, particular the trial and conviction of a doctor for the attempted murder of a consenting terminally ill patient, and the House of Lords' ruling that

Level Set Estimation

2014
A density level set can be estimated using three different methodologies: Plug-in methods, excess mass methods, and hybrid methods. The three groups of algorithms to estimate level sets are reviewed in this work. In addition, two new hybrid methods are proposed.

Computation of Level-Set Components From Level Lines

IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, 2011
We present an algorithm to compute the connected components of upper or lower level sets from level lines. The running time is O (n + |τ|), where n is the size of the image and |τ| is the number of level lines.

Level Set Methods

2006
The level set method for capturing moving fronts was introduced in 1987 by Osher and Sethian [401]. It has proven to be phenomenally successful as a numerical device. For example, as of June 2002, typing in “Level Set Methods” on Google’s search engine gives roughly 2800 responses and the original article has been cited over 530 times (according to web

Connected level sets, minimizing sets, and uniqueness in optimization

Journal of Optimization Theory and Applications, 1982
Intimate relationships are investigated between connectedness properties of the lower level sets of a real functionf on a topological spaceX and the uniqueness of suitably defined minimizing sets forf. Two distinct theories are presented, the simpler one pertaining to the LE-level sets $$LE_\alpha (f) = \{ x \in X|f(x) \leqslant \alpha \} $$ and ...
