Humans seek to predict, explain, and control their environments. Generalizations—like those expressed by “children like candy” and “cigarettes cause cancer”—provide one resource to facilitate these tasks. We develop a proposal tying the acceptability judgments of generics to the psychological functions of generalizations.

The determination of what is said and what is implied
Is what is said determined by syntax, conventional meaning, and select aspects of context? This thesis—semanticity—seems plausible because what is said can diverge from both what the speaker means and what the addressee understands, and because ordinary speakers know what is said when presented with a novel sentence‐context pair.

Abstract This article reconsiders Jacques Maritain's philosophical poetics by situating it within his longstanding debate with Maurice Blondel over the nature and unity of intellect.
