Can speakers’ virtual lexical richness be calculated?

The aim of this paper is to show an original method of calculating individual lexical richness. This method leads to a non-linear optimization. A randomized algorithm, Simulated Annealing, is used in order to carry out the optimization. This procedure has allowed us to represent a function from which we obtain a reliable pattern for lexical estimation.

Diversity index and entropy as measures of lexical richness

Simpson's Diversity and entropy are two good cases in point. Both indices were conceived outside the field of linguistics but they both relate satisfactorily, on a conceptual basis, tolr which can then be defined as an absolute entity. Moreover, the use of whole frequency distributions will be regarded by some as a guarantee of quality.
