Leydig cell tumor of testis

In adult patients with Leydig cell tumor of the testis, endocrinologic signs occur in 30 per cent of the cases and often precede the onset of a palpable testicular mass. Gynecomastia is the most common endocrinologic manifestation and probably is due to increased estrogen secretion by the Leydig cells.

Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor

Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors belong to the group of sex-cord stromal tumors of the ovary. They account for less than 0,5% of all ovarian neoplasms. The majority of these tumors are benign, and almost all are localised unilaterally. Herewith, we describe an ovarian Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor in an 11-year-old girl.

Insulin-like 3 (INSL3) is a hormone produced by Leydig cells (LCs) and leads to physiological testicular descent during embryonic development. We investigated the expression of INSL3 by immunohistochemistry in normal LCs, in Leydig cell tumor (LCT) (n=17 including 15 testes and 2 ovaries) and in Leydig cell hyperplasia (LCH) (n=10).

Leydig cell tumor in identical twin

A case is presented of an identical twin who had an interstitial cell tumor of the testis removed, and comparison is made with his identical brother over an ensuing six-year period. The dramatic effects of the interstitial cell tumor are clearly shown in the comparison of the two males over this six-year period.

A malignant Leydig cell tumor of the testis

A 40-year-old man was referred to our hospital with gynecomastia and painless swelling of the right scrotum. Ultrasonography revealed a 15 x 10 mm mass with low echogenicity of the right testis. We performed right high orchiectomy. Histologically, Reinke's crystals and capsular invasion by tumor cells were found.

Leydig cell tumors of the testis are rare, comprising 1 to 3% of all testicular neoplasms.l.2 Approximately 10% of these tumors are malignant. They most commonly present as a testicular mass or with endocrine abnormalities, such as gynecomastia and loss of libido.

The Diagnosis of Leydig Cell Tumors in Childhood

We report the clinical and hormonal findings in two boys with isosexual precocity secondary to Levdig cell tumor of the testis. The hormonal profile at the initial evaluation was quite different in the two cases suggesting differences in steroid biosynthesis by the tumors. These differences indicate that a dexamethasone suppression test may be required
