A Proposed Solution to the Scholarly Communication Crisis

open access: yes, 2007
After reviewing the history and parameters of the scholarly communications crisis, particularly in regard to skyrocketing prices for journals in the natural sciences, the author reviews and rejects previously attempted solutions.

University libraries consortia in Spain

open access: yesSerials: The Journal for the Serials Community, 2003
The first Spanish university library consortium, Consorcio de Bibliotecas Universitarias de Cataluna, was formed in 1996. Other consortium in Spain were created from 1996 to 2002 to negotiate licences for content. They include: Consorcio de las Universidades de la Comunidad de Madrid y de la UNED para la cooperacin bibliotecaria (Consorcio Madroo ...

Light Switchable Ionic Conductivity of Arylazopyrazole Modified Polysiloxanes

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
We present a polysiloxane functionalized with a novel arylazopyrazole dye that undergoes reversible photoisomerization. Upon lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide addition and UV irradiation, the polymer exhibits a shift in tan(d) toward higher frequencies and enhanced ionic conductivity.

Elastomers Combining Damping Efficiency With Rapid Recovery

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Double network granular elastomers (DNGEs) combine high energy dissipation under both cyclic loading and high impact with rapid shape recovery. 3D printing enables the production of complex, customizable structures with tailored performance. Recyclable DNGEs retain their properties over multiple recycling cycles.

e-cooperation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Considers how the library tradition of co-operation and sharing can be transferred to an electronic environment. A range of activities from shared collections, OAI, digitisation and information arbitrage are considered.

Multi‐Mode Deep Strong Coupling in a Multi Quantum Well Fabry–Perot Cavity

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Multi‐mode deep‐strong coupling is demonstrated in a 166‐well heterostructure that acts as a Fabry–Perot cavity. Even cavity modes couple strongly to the cyclotron resonance, producing large vacuum Rabi splittings and a rich polaritonic spectrum captured by a full Hopfield model.

The electronic library: cornucopia or poisoned chalice? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
At first sight the "big (or all-you-can-eat) deal" seems excellent value for libraries and their users, and represents the shining possibilities of the electronic age.

From Rigid to Soft Robotic Approaches for Neuroendoscopy

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Robotic assistance has had minimal impact on deep intraventricular surgeries, where small‐scale, precision, and reduced invasiveness can contribute to improved patient outcomes. Emerging technologies in rigid, soft, and hybrid robotics are reviewed to identify the most promising mechanisms for deep brain navigation in addition to an attempt to identify

A Soft Robotic Fish With a Dielectric Elastomer Actuator Body and Negative Stiffness Spine

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This work introduces a bio‐mimetic soft robotic fish driven by fiber‐reinforced dielectric elastomer actuators integrated as its body. By prestretching this active skin against a flexible spine, a negative stiffness system is created, enabling large‐amplitude bending.
