A Solute Gradient in the Tear Meniscus. II. Implications for Lid Margin Disease, including Meibomian Gland Dysfunction [PDF]

open access: yesOcular Surface, 2011
We have hypothesized previously that evaporation from the tears generates a solute gradient across the tear meniscus, which delivers hyperosmolar stress to the mucocutaneous junction (MCJ) of the lid margin. This is proposed as the basis for Marx's line, a line of staining with topically applied dyes that lies directly behind the MCJ.

Lid Margin Microbiome in Stevens-Johnson Syndrome Patients With Lid Margin Keratinization and Severe Dry Eye Disease

open access: yesInvestigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science
The current study evaluated the lid margin microbiome of keratinized lid margins of patients with chronic Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and compared it with healthy controls and historically reported lid margin microbiome of patients with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).Eyelid margin swabs of 20 asymptomatic adults (mean age = 29 ± 12 years) and 10 ...

Predictive performance of corneal and lid margin sensitivity for dry eye disease: An investigator-masked, prospective, prognostic accuracy study

open access: yesOcular Surface
To evaluate the prognostic ability of non-contact esthesiometry corneal and lid margin sensitivity measurements in detecting symptoms and signs of dry eye disease, as defined by the global consensus TFOS DEWS II criteria.A total of 87 community residents (58 females; mean ± SD age, 53 ± 16 years) were recruited in an investigator-masked, prospective ...
